NOT ANOTHER LOVE STORY

Episode – 36

I didn’t want to go to the police station, I didn’t see the need. After all, I was the one being shot from behind.

Mum didn’t want me to drive, I kept saying I was okay _ apparently I wasn’t. I kept zoning out, getting lost in thought and entertaining the possibility of an outcome different from the present one. Maybe if I hadn’t been too hard on myself things would have come out different. Allan would have learned to love me and I would have fallen for him.

“Your dad is very upset,” Mum told me.
“I know.”
“What will happen next? It would have made much sense if Allan wasn’t caught. Nonetheless, you made sure he got caught.” She pressed on the topic.
“Well, our brain isn’t always right compared to our hearts. Him leaving the company and his Dad’s wealth might seem like the right thing to do… But it isn’t. Not only that, if he won’t be around then it means more work for me and I don’t want that.” I nagged.
“Don’t tell me you want to go and look for that white boy.” Mum frowned. The fact that Charlie was white pained her more than him being from another continent.

No sooner had we arrived at the police station than Allan walked out. Beside him was his mother and friend, Lucas.
Mum walked up to them, checked on Allan and kept talking to which a hug was landed. I would lie if I say it was cold, cloudy and showed evidence of rain… Rather, it was packed with reporters. People taking photos and trying to take a look at Allan as the Police escorted him to the car. We exchanged gazes but that was all, when my eye caught Lucas _ he quickly faced the other way.

“Thank you for coming.” Allan’s mother said to me. I never saw her walk towards me, the only thing I heard was her voice.
“Coming here was a big mistake…” I responded.
“Don’t say that he’s going to marry you.” He said assuredly.
“Am not worried about that anymore. Am going to be with a man who has clearly demonstrated that he doesn’t love me. I’ve been humiliated in front of the whole country. Married won’t fix that.” I told her. I turned around about to enter the car when she held my hand.
“I understand. You’ve got every right to be peeved. I can’t promise you that if you went ahead with the wedding things will change immediately, all I can say is that you need to be hopeful and have faith that things will get better, somehow.” She let go of my hands once she said that.

I got into the car and began to wait for mum.

“You not going to say anything for yourself?” Limpo asked me. She was done dressing and about to leave the house.
“I don’t think I gave to. Knowing you, you’ve already caught up with what’s happening.” I sighed, “You know what, I didn’t think my life would take such a turn so fast in the past few months. I was fine with my job, I was saving up for college and I had put Besa in school. Then that Allan guy just had to show up.”
“Well, we can never change the past _ regardless of how much hurt and pain it gives us. With that said, we can’t stop leaving either can we?” She smiled.
“I guess so…”
“Whatever has happened, if you keep being in denial with it _ moving on will prove to be difficult. Instead, accept the pain, embrace the hurt and match on to the next level of life. So, instead of drowning yourself thinking of what would have been… Think about what can still be.” Limpo warmed up to her words.

She kissed me on the cheeks and rushed out to catch a ride with her Dad. All I had to do was clean up and leave if I felt like doing so.

“Goodmorning, Sir.”
“Mwape… This is a surprise. How can I be of help?” The manager asked me.
“I wanted to ask if that job you told me about is still available…”
“Yes… It’s still available.” He told me.
“I will come on Monday to your office.”

Limpo was right, even though admitting it got me pissed. With all the noise and chaos going on, being away from Allan was the only right thing to do.

On Facebook, every online media page was reporting about him. The comments were crazy. I finished what I was doing and asked Limpo’s brother to drop me home. Nothing was out of place there, at least that’s what I thought until I got inside.

“Mmmh I didn’t think you will be coming back.” Those were the first words I heard. It was Chipo.
“What are you talking about?” I asked.
“Don’t try and act ignorant, I came back and found you had left. Despite all your clothes being in place, I checked the wardrobe… Your makeup kit, your panties and a few other things were gone. You followed that man didn’t you?” She asked me.
“Please keep your voice down…” I begged her.
“Why should I? What makes you think I haven’t told mum or better, what makes you think Besa didn’t tell her because she also noticed when she got home.” She asked me.

I didn’t know what to do. Like a fool, I quickly began to unpack my big handbag and arrange everything before mum could show up.
Chipo then told me that they had not told mum, before I knew it I began to cry.

“Am sorry…” I told my sister.
“It’s okay. Don’t cry.”
“It’s not okay. I was going to run away from my family in the name of love. How stupid of me.” I sobbed.
“It’s not good for a pregnant lady to cry. You going to make your baby an emotional one. Come on, stop crying love.” Chipo held me in her arms.
