The Retribution – Episode 15

Eva’s Retribution – Chapter 15

*07:00 PM*

“Here they are,” Liam whispered to Emily his wife who was standing beside him. They were both at the verandah of the house, waiting for their guests. Liam had told her about the young business couple who were going to take his business to the next level.

Eric and Eva were seated in the same black Limousine and they also spotted their guests waiting at the verandah of the mansion. The limousine stopped for both of them to step out before following the Marshal’s guidance into the garage.

As usual, Eva and Eric locked hands as they approached the verandah to meet their hosts.

“Welcome, James,” Liam greeted with a wide smile, offering a handshake to the younger man. He turned to Eva and also offered her a handshake. “Mrs Cooper.”

“Good evening, Mr Liam,” Eva smiled back, taking his hand in hers.

“Please, meet my wife, Emily,” Liam introduced shortly.

“Good evening, Ma’am,” Eric offered the woman a handshake first.

“Good evening, James Cooper. My husband has told me so much about you,” she took his hand in hers. Then she turned to Eva with a bright smile. “You’ve got a pretty wife here.”

“Thank you, Mrs Hudson,” Eva smiled back.

“Please, come in,” Liam ushered them in after the formalities.

“This place is so big,” Eric wondered as they walked into the house. “I wonder how many stewards are helping you maintain the place.”

“Many of them,” Liam replied. “About 43 people live in this mansion and around; 15 stewards and 22 security guards.”

“Twenty-two security guards?” Eric echoed in surprise.

“Yeah, they used to be 15 but I increased them yesterday when my brother returned with his family to Australia two days,” Liam replied.

“Your brother’s family stays here too?” Eric asked.

“For now,” Liam replied. “At the other side of the mansion.”

Eric heaved a sigh of relief, knowing that Liam’s brother and his family won’t have to come in between their task.

His eyes met with Eva and he caught some uncertainty in her eyes. He knew she was a bit shaken as the number of guards they expected to meet there had changed. But that was not going to be a problem as they might have nothing to do with the guards if the plan does well.

“Meet our son, Liam Jr,” the man introduced a young boy who came running towards them as they approached the dining room. Liam Jnr looked exactly like his father but was a more handsome version.

“Hey, Liam,” Eva shook the boy gently on his shoulder.

“Hello aunty,” the young boy answered, giving Eva a cute smile.

Eva felt pierced in her heart on seeing the boy smile at her. She felt guilty to be part of the team that would make the boy an orphan that night.

Soon enough, the stewards dished them Apricot chicken with vegetables.

“Never had a better meal since we arrived Canberra,” Eric remarked after taking a few bites.

“Glad you like it,” Mrs. Hudson smiled.

“My wife is a good cook, she made this herself,” Liam boasted.

Eric chuckled. “Grace here is also a very good cook.”

“Wow!” Mrs Hudson’s face lit up as she glanced at Eva. “If you were going to be here longer, I would have loved to invite her to join me in the kitchen.”

Eva blushed.

“Maybe that will happen when next we return,” Eric answered. His eyes met with Eva’s briefly and he winked.

Eva watched him in awe as he ate freely. She was amazed at how good he was at acting. He was being so friendly to a family he had come to murder.

“Do you have a child yet?” Liam Jnr directed his question to Eva in a tiny voice.

“No, honey,” she smiled at him. “I and James only got married six months ago. But we plan to make babies soon.”

“Oh! Yeah,” Eric joined in cheerfully. “I hope we have a boy first. I’m gonna name him after you, Liam.”

Everyone laughed heartily at Eric’s joke, except for Eva who only forced a smile.

The more he was cheerful with them, the more she got pricked in her heart.

They soon finished with the meal and left the dining room to the sitting area. Liam Jnr left for his room.

“Emily, why not show Grace around the house while I discuss business with James,” Liam suggested.

“I was thinking about that too,” Emily agreed and turned to Eva. “Shall we?”

“Yeah,” Eva got up to follow the woman. She took a glance at Eric and saw the look on his face. She knew what it meant. He wanted her to follow the instructions as they have planned.

Eva started by taking out her android device. She turned on the GPS location and her hotspot. That was going to help the Nanl tech support in Canberra hack the surveillance camera system of the mansion. With that, the men outside will help them escape easily from the building.

“So, I checked you up online,” Liam continued after the women were out of sight.

“You did?” Eric chuckled.

“Yeah, I checked your company and it seems you have a good reputation. That has boosted my confidence to work with you.”

Eric smiled. The tech team had done a good job in hacking the website of a reputable US company and had included his name and picture as the CEO. The hacked version of the website was only available in Australia, so there was no way the real company would find out about the attack easily.

Fifteen minutes later

“Wow! I thought the exterior was beautiful enough, never knew you had more inside,” Eva remarked as the woman showed her around. They were currently in the Home Theater, the room designed for the family to enjoy movies together.

After admiring the place for a while, Eva turned to the woman. “Do you have a study?”

“Yeah, you wanna see it?” Emily asked.

“Absolutely! We’ll love to have something like that in our next house. So, I’ll like to see how yours is arranged.”

“Come with me,” the woman gladly led Eva to the room.

After walking down straight two perpendicular hallways, they got to the study. It was closer to the sitting room and they could hear the men laughing aloud.

“Oh! Amazing,” Eva commended as Emily turned on the lights to reveal the beauty of the place.

The woman smiled at the younger lady’s remarks.

The study was beautiful designed with the long shelf placed at the wall opposite the door. It was designed into six sections and contained many books. There was also a reading table and comfortable chairs close to the window. Close to the centre of the study was a couch and a pouffe. Some magazines could be seen on the pouffe.

Eva moved closer to the shelf and began to scan through from the left side.

“These are Liam’s study books, right?” she asked as her hands fondled the books in the first section. The woman nodded in reply. She moved on to the next sections which contain novels. “Are these for Liam too?”

“No, those are my collection,” she replied. “I love reading novels. Would you like to have some?”

“Maybe,” Eva replied without much interest in her voice.

She continued moving from one section to another, asking questions until she got to the fifth one. There were photo albums stacked in the upper part and some documents in the lower part. She knew instantly that the place contained the document she was to retrieve.

Her right fingers reached for the wristwatch on her left wrist and she tapped a button on it. Eric was going to get a vibration from his wristwatch, which will signal to him that she found where the documents were located. She then went down slowly to reach for the documents.

“Those documents are kind of private to Liam, so I won’t like us touching them,” Emily warned even before Eva asked.

“Oh!” Eva turned and squinted at the woman’s face. She got up. “Why does he keep private documents here in the study?”

“Excuse me?” Emily frowned. “It’s a private study and we can keep anything we want anywhere.”

Eva shrugged. “Was just wondering why it should be kept here instead of his office,” she voiced as she slowly moved to the next section. “What if the kid picks any of it.”

“Liam knows better than to mess with his father’s documents,” the woman answered. “He doesn’t go near them.”

“This session contains business books, right?” Eva asked after picking out a heavy book and seeing the title.

“Yeah, business, management…” the woman was still talking when Eva hit hard on the head with the book.

She flung the book away and then grabbed the woman behind her neck. She slammed her face into the wooden shelf, leaving her to fall with an injury on the head.

She stared at the woman for a while before turning back to the section where the documents were. Her instructions were to ki*ll the woman but only after laying hands on the document. She quickly began to search through the stacked files and soon saw the one labelled “DTR”. That was the exact document she was to retrieve.
She set the document apart and was about to rise when she noticed that the woman had gotten up. She turned just in time to dodge a flower vase the woman tried to hit her head with. Swiftly, she launched an uppercut to the woman’s jaw as she got up.

Emily staggered back and screamed in pain but charged forward immediately, forcing Eva back against the shelf.
Eva sent a kick with her knees to the woman’s groin and then followed up with a kick to the chest that sent her rolling on the ground. The woman got up and tried to run but Eva followed her and pushed her over the couch.

Immediately after getting the vibration on the wrist, Eric knew it was time to act. He also tapped a button on his wristwatch to signal the driver of the limousine. The man was still talking about his business deal but he was listening no more.

“I need something from you, Liam,” Eric interrupted the man.

“What’s that?” Liam squinted.

“The keys to your bulletproofed vehicle,” he replied.

Liam stared at him in shock, wondering what he needed it for.

Without saying anything else, Eric dipped his hand into the inner pocket of his jacket and took out his pistol. He also brought out a silencer and began to fix it on the mouth of the pistol.

Liam stared in horror and raised his hands slowly. Eric rose to his feet.

“My bulletproofed car keys aren’t here,” the man replied shakily. “They’re with one of the guards.”

“I know, Liam. Take out your phone, call the guard and tell them to give it to my driver.”

Liam hesitated for a while. He was still wondering what was going on. How his business partner had turned into a gunman suddenly was confusing.

“Pick it up, Liam!” Eric barked.

Liam picked his phone immediately and dialled a number. “Take our bullet-proofed car keys to our guest’s driver.

They need the car,” he ordered and cut the call. He squinted. “I don’t know what you think you’re doing but you’re not going to leave here alive and even if you do, it won’t take long before you’re caught in the bulletproofed vehicle.”

“Shut up, mother******!” Eric slammed. “Now, get up.” He ordered and Liam obeyed. “You’re going to shut the door to this living room and open the side door which leads to the garden.”

Liam grunted in amazement. His bulletproofed car was parked closer to the garden. He wondered how Eric knew where the vehicle was parked. What he didn’t know was that there was a team somewhere, scanning the house through the surveillance cameras and sending Eric messages. Every time Eric looked at his phone during their conversation, he had thought he was only showing him examples of his works, not knowing he was also reading text messages.

“Okay, do whatever you want with me but don’t hurt my wife or Liam,” the man pleaded as he proceeded to the front door.

Eric followed behind him slowly, dipping his hand again into the inner jacket pocket. He took out a wireless earpiece and stuck it into his left ear. That was the device meant to listen and communicate faster with the outside team. Eva also had one with her.

After dealing the woman several blows, Eva took out her gun which was strapped in between her thighs. She attached the silencer quickly and fired a bullet into the woman’s head before walking back to pick the document.

After getting the document, she took out her earpiece and plugged it into her ears. She began to walk towards the exit but paused a second to stare at the dead body. Her heartbeat began to beat faster as she saw the blood drooling out of the woman’s head.

At that same moment, one of the stewards who had heard noises from the study came in to check what was happening. Eva turned towards the door and fired a bullet into the steward’s body. Someone else came in at the same time and Eva fired another bullet spontaneously. She froze in shock as she realized she had just shot Liam Jnr.

Her eyes blinked in horror as she gasped. She walked slowly towards the door. The bullet had hit the steward in the chest but went into the boy’s belly instead. He was still alive but breathing profusely.

“Oh! F*ck,” she exclaimed as she broke down on her knees beside the boy. He was staring at her and wincing in pain.

A voice sounded through the earpiece in her ear.

“Have you gotten the document?” Eric asked from the other end. “Follow the directions sent from the tech team and meet me towards the garden now, we have to leave. Can you hear me, Eva?”

She remained frozen to the ground without responding. There was no way she was going to leave the bleeding kid to die, she would never forgive herself.
