Chapter 9

Loretta

I came back to the garden and didn’t see Unugwa. I think she went to a class. I hurried off to my own class and waited for the teacher. Andy came and sat beside me

Andy : mom wants you to come home tonight. For dinner
Me: really?

He nodded and looked at me
Me: uhm I already have plans for tonight

He raised a brow
Andy: really?
Me: yes I made plans with..
Andy: cancel it. You don’t want to disappoint mom

Me: hmm
Andy: you have to come
Me: is there another reason you want me to come?

He sighed and looked at the board without answering me.

Me: Andy
I looked at him sternly

Andy: okay. Dad will be around for dinner and he’s not going to pick on me when someone else is around

Me: okay I’ll come

He smiled and ruffled my hair
Andy: that’s my little sis

I glared at him, just because he’s a year older. I remember when he used to bully me when we were little. Anytime he comes home for Christmas, he picks on me. But now he’s just the sweetest thing.

The teacher entered the class and I rolled my eyes when he began to teach Geography. My least favorite teacher who made me suddenly dislike Geography.

Daniel
I was so happy that my plan worked with those boys. I paid them after school and warned them not to tell anyone.
I saw Unugwa going to the parking lot and I ran after her

Me: hey
Unugwa: whoah were you running?

I chuckled amidst high breathing
Me: yeah. I wanted to catch up with you

She smiled and rubbed her neck.
Me: you’ll be coming to school tomorrow right?

Unugwa : of course I will
Me: will you get me some biscuits for me tomorrow?

Unugwa : you can buy them if you want them
Me: no, I’ll save myself that stress

Unugwa : okay I’ll get them for you
Me: give me your number, just so I’ll remind you

I gave her my phone and she imputed her number. I thanked her and watched her go to a car. I went back to take my bag

Unugwa

Daniel is actually so sweet. I thought he was a big time bully but he seems to be really nice. He helped me to send away those boys, made me laugh at different intervals and asked me questions about what my life was like before.

I guess we can actually make good friends.

After Loretta told me that she was going to Andy’s house immediately after school, I texted Anibe to pick me up instead.
He wore an black gem stud earring on the right ear

Me: I seriously don’t like it that you’re now wearing that

I looked at it and scoffed then shut the car door

Anibe: it’s to get the girls little sis
Me: the last time I checked, girls don’t hate boys without a piercing

He chuckled
Anibe: so you finally got your crush to speak with you huh?

Me: what?
He drove the car out of the lot

Anibe: that dude we saw at the estate

Me: Daniel? He is not my crush. Why would I crush on him?

Anibe : he’s muscular, handsome and looks like he’s got the action power
He winked at me

Me: it’s so funny you’re my elder brother but you’re the one corrupting my mind. Aren’t elder brothers supposed to be strict?

Anibe: if I was strict, would you have liked it?

I rubbed my temples

Anibe: if you weren’t my sister… I would have asked you out

I burst out laughing
Me: you’re the craziest thing I’ve ever seen

Anibe: ssh, your laugh is deafening

I smacked him on the shoulder and he glanced at me and started to laugh

Anibe: the old man is traveling back to Africa tomorrow

Me: dad?
Anibe: yeah, he’s going to bring grandma

I squealed mentally. I love my granny so much, we can literally talk about anything. Anything at all

Anibe: you’re happy, aren’t you?

Me: of course I am. But you’re happier

I smirked at him and he chuckled. Yeah, he’s grandma’s favorite. Maybe that’s because he was her first grandchild.

Whenever she’s around, Anibe looks for trouble and won’t get yelled out by dad. Grandma has his back no matter what. And dad respects her like his own mother. Sometimes when you see Dad and grandma talking, you’d think he’s actually her son. But he’s actually a son-in-law.

Anibe : so do you wanna talk about that dude?
Me: which dude again?
Anibe: the Daniel guy. Who’s he?

Me: the second richest guy in school
Anibe: whoah he looks like it. So who’s the first?

Me: Andy
Anibe: So the Andy? You like him?

Me: we don’t even talk
Anibe : then talk

I looked away, not ready to start a conversation based on my classmates

Andy

I walked into the living room with Loretta trailing behind me. My suit was on my arm due to the heat. Loretta too was holding hers

Loretta : wow, you changed the chandelier

She looked up at the new chandelier in the ceiling
Me: I didn’t change it. Dad did with his money

Loretta : whatever

We walked further and she sat on a cushion. I went upstairs to change after ordering a maid to get her drinks.
When I came downstairs she was watching television and sipping a drink

Me: are you comfortable in that uniform?

Loretta : nope. Good thing I’m already with my clothes. I might even spend the night here

Me: please do. I’m begging you to stay.
She sighed

Loretta : would you please show me where I can shower. I’m sweaty

Me: go to the guestroom opposite my room

I laid down and laid my hands on the little white pillow on my stomach.

Loretta : you should be a gentleman and show me the way up

She threw me a pillow and stood up
Me: you’re not a stranger here stupid girl. What if you live here?

Loretta : then I’d fight with you everyday
She picked her bag and raced upstairs

I chuckled and sat up then looked at the floor, if Lorette was here my life would be better

I took my phone out and went through my pictures. When I say my pictures, I mean the pictures I took with my camera. The only picture missing is that of my dad, mom’s pictures are here. Loretta’s and even some maids that I took their pictures without their knowledge. Surprisingly the pictures are wonderful.

Some of our maids are really pretty, especially the younger ones.

I heard Loretta’s foot steps. She had already changed into a singlet, yellow in color and black shorts with yellow flip flops

Me: so soon
Loretta : yeah. Can I use your phone?

Me: what again?
Loretta : just to make a phone call
She rolled her eyes

Me: who?
I stretched it to her. She took it and walked to the other cushion

Loretta : Unugwa
Me: the black girl. Why?

Loretta : I wanna apologize for cancelling our plans of going out tonight

Me: you wanted to go out with her? Are you guys that close?

Loretta : of course. She’s going to be my best friend. I really like her

Me: hmm
Loretta : she’s pretty. Amazing, wise, adventurous, caring and she has a good heart. Compared to that stupid Agnes

Me: I didn’t know
She looked up
Loretta : why don’t you make friends with her?

Me: no thanks. Mom doesn’t like black people

Loretta : what?
Me: just joking
I chuckled and she glared at me before calling her friend

*********
I just thank God Loretta was with me last night and during breakfast. Dad’s face could ki*ll and thanks to the talkative, she didn’t give him a chance to talk. And since mom was happy, dad didnt seem to object.

I don’t know why that man wouldn’t let me be, is it because I’m the only child?

After Loretta and I entered school, she went straight to see Unugwa. I just went straight to the library because I don’t have a class yet.

As I sat down, I saw the black girl coming towards the table I was sitting. I looked over at the other end of the table and saw a bag and books.

I looked at her as she innocently went to the bag without looking at me. She took the bag and walked past me. Just as she was a few steps away, she tried to take a book out of her bag while walking. Her legs twisted with each other and she fell.
Though only four students were in the library, I was the closest to where she was so I stood up like it was a reflex action and I helped her up

Me: are you okay?
She nodded

Black girl : thank you

I picked up the book and gave it to her. She took it

Me: be careful
She nodded and smiled then tried to walk away but she yelped and almost fell but I caught her mid air

Me: did you Twist your ankle?
She didn’t answer. I helped her to stand upright but my hand was behind her

Me: take two steps
She took a step and while she tried to take the second one, she winced in pain and almost fell but I held her

Her right ankle has been sprained
