Chapter 2-EASYLIFE MODEL COLLEGE

Easylife model college is a day and boarding school built on 3 plots of land and founded by chief A.V Oyeleke.Built in 1968,the school boasts of popular alumni,notably the current senate president,Dr Williams Adegbenro,the former registrar of JAMB,Prof.Nonso Stephens and a host of other importanp personalities who had at one time or the other passed through the school.
The school has both the junior and senior secondary schools and has been named the bedrock of academic excellence.There are six blocks in the school;the first block houses the admin. building and the jss 1 classes A-D.The second block houses two junior school staff rooms and the jss 2 classes A-D.The third block houses the jss 3 classes A-F.The fourth block houses the sss 1 classes A-F.The fifth block houses the senior school staff room and the sss 2 classes A-D.The sixth and final blockhouses the science labs(Biology,Chemistry and Physics),the computer lab and the sss 3 classes,A-C.
It was the beginning of a new term,the third term of the academic session.The junior class students were lined up dressed in their traditional white shirts and red shorts for boys and white shirts and red skirts for girls.The senior school students were dressed in white shorts and white trousers for the boys and white shirts and white skirts for the girls.They all had red ties on with stripes to indicate their classes.
The acting senior prefect,Oluwole Smith stood before the students to lead the assembly;
“stand firm for the national anthem”.The students chanted the national anthem with different timbre and pitches of voices.The national pledge and the school anthem were also recited.
Mr.Adegbola,the social studies teacher stepped forward to take the morning devotion.He was of moderate height and darkskinned.He was nicknamed “jasper” after the famous hollwood star Jasper Stones becaus they had the same head structure(round head,jordan haircut with beards making his face scary).He was the most dreaded teacher in the whole school.His classes always start with two strokes of cane for everybody in the class(becaus he wants absolute silence during his class).He beats for any slight offence making virtually all the students in the school hate him;
“our topic for today is complacency”,he began…
………………….
I watched as the round headed wicked teacher ranted on the podium from my position the line(the back because i was the tallest and oldest in jss3 c.i looked sideways and saw my agemates in higher classes with their trousers and skirts and was ashamed of myself.Here i was,in the same class with those who call me ‘aunty’.Our JSCE starts in 2 months time and i know without a miracle happeningalmost creating a scene,she left me,but still glanced back suspiciously at me occassionally.
………………….
After Mr Jasper finisghed his message,the principal stepped forward to give the announcements he had;
“Good morning to you all”,he began in his gruffy voice.
“Good morning sir”,the students replied in unison.
“First of all,he continued,i’ll like to welcome us into another term,the final term this session and i want us all work hard and give no room for complacency.For the jss3 students,your JSCE exams starts in two months time and for the sss3 students,your SSCE starts in 3 months time.You have to study well so as not to write these exams twice”.
“Now i’ll like to introduce our new teacher to you.His name is Mr Kolawole Adejare.He is young and vibrant and he just finished his youth service.He’ll be taking the Jss classes Mathematics and the Sss classes Further Maths.I want you all tocooperate with him,he is very friendly and his office is always wide open for any problems you may have on your studies.thank you,a round of applause for Mr Adejare please.The principal gave out some other infomation after which the students filed into their respective classes.
………………….
As was the tradition in my school,every first day of the new term was assigned for sharing of results and revison of the last term’s exam questions.Mrs Adekola,our class governor stepped in with the results of 38 students held firmly in her hands.she welcomed us into another term and admonished us a little before the sharing began.
“Like i always do,i’ll start from the last position,our mama of the class(this generated a round of thunderous laughter from the class),Adaora Smith.My legs became heavy as i stepped forward to receive my result sheet.Tears formed in my eyes as i returned to my seat and placed my head on my locker in shame.I raised my head to behold Liz’s face and i could see the pain in them.I had disappointed everyone again…
to be continued…
