Chapter 54

Daniella and Damien were currently in the waiting room of the medical centre, waiting for their names to be called for the fetal MRI scan.

People passed by rapidly, random noises and conversations blurred out in her head but all Daniella could think about were the results .

“Mrs Damien?” the doctor called out into the room.

Both Daniella and Damien whipped their heads towards the doctor waiting for them.

She inwardly gulped and stood up slowly while Damien put his arm around her shoulder and helped her walk over to the doctor waiting for them.

“Good morning, are you two ready for your fetal MRI scan?” he asked, guiding them towards a room at the end of the building.

“Yes,” she said with a small voice.

Once they entered, the doctor grabbed something from the shelf and gave it to her. It was a simple white medical robe made for her to change into.

“Firstly we’ll have you change into the robe. Please ensure that you’re not wearing any metal,” the doctor advised.

“When you’re ready, please come out to the room opposite this side and we’ll talk you through the process.”

Daniella nodded and watched as the doctor smiled and left the room, leaving the two of them alone in the room.

When the door closed, Daniella breathed in slowly. She looked over at the medical bed that had the packaged robe and quietly walked over to it.

She then started taking off her clothes which fortunately was only a maxi dress so it was easy to take off.

Throughout the change, she wasn’t even paying attention to Damien who was next to her.

When she finally put the medical robe on, she realised it needed to be tied from the back and frowned.

“Here, let me help,” Damien said, walking over towards her.

Damien stood behind her and quietly began to tie the ribbons on the back together.

“Is it too tight?” he asked softly.

Daniella shook her head.

After a silent minute, Damien exhaled loudly and turned Daniella around.

He casually caressed the side of her face and kissed her forehead to which she froze.

“You’ll be fine,” he reassured.

Daniella tried her best to not let her emotions run wild at that moment.

Within the next few minutes, Daniella and Damien left towards the opposite room where the doctor was waiting.

There, he explained the procedure and what to expect during the whole process.

When it was time for her to get in, they carefully helped her lay down on the bed and she laid there silently as they fixed her up.

Damien stood on the other side of the glass looking at her with a comforting gaze. He gave her a small smile and she replied with a weak frown.

She tried to not think about what happened between them in the past. All she needed to do was think about the present.

“Ready?” the doctor said.

Daniella breathed in slowly and closed her eyes before giving a thumbs up.

The machine thumped before beginning to slide her into the tube. It was an excruciatingly slow but painless procedure. The real scary part were the results that came afterwards. If she really needed a MRI scan then it was already a bad sign for her in the first place.

But just as fast as she was dwindling on it, was she out of the tube in the same manner.

“And we are done,” the doctor replied through the speaker.

“Great job.”

Daniella slowly cracked an eye open and blinked slowly.

She then carefully sat herself up before the other nurses came in and helped her off the table.

As soon as she left the room, Damien enthusiastically walked up to her and gave her a gentle hug.

“Are you feeling alright?” Damien asked comfortingly.

“Yeah,” she replied lowly.

The two quickly went back to the room and changed back into her dress before they went to see the doctor.

“Well, the results will come out in approximately one week. We will notify you when they are ready so just sit tight and wait for our message.”

The couple nodded.

“Thank you,” Daniella replied.

It had been silent on the car entire ride home when all of a sudden, Damien spoke up abruptly.

“Look, Daniella. I don’t know about this,” he sighed.

Daniella scrunched up her eyebrows confused.

“What?” she puzzled.

“I don’t know if we should keep it,” he restated.

Daniella furrowed her eyebrows at him. She didn’t want to think of such a thing when the results hadn’t even come out yet.

“What are you talking about? You don’t even know if she has her kidneys or not,” she replied a little pissed.

“And the baby is a she, not an it,” she reprimanded.

“Look at the signs, Daniella,” he said.

“It already has cystic fibrosis and is about to have one kidney or no kidneys. It’ll probably save us the pain when we lose it at birth,” he explained.

Daniella gaped inwardly.

“We won’t lose it. And you said it yourself, we can support her even if she has cystic fibrosis. One kidney won’t change that,” she fired back.

“If it isn’t born with any kidneys then there’s no point thinking about cystic fibrosis when it’s going to die anyway,” he argued.

She flinched at how morbid he made it sound.

Did he not understand delicacy?

“She’ll survive,” she replied stubbornly.

He glanced at her and shook his head.

She heard him sigh but he did not reply.

He kept his eyes on the road and kept driving until they reached back home with no further words spoken.
