FLASHBACK – Some Years Back

El Deols, Anthanna

“Florence,” Lawrence called for the second time as he pushed the door open and stepped into the living room.

He shut the door behind him and stopped to stare around the living room. He was amused at how disorderly it was. There was a pack of unfinished pizza on the centre table with a bottle of wine and a half-filled cup. He wondered why she left her pizza unfinished and the living room scattered

As he moved further and bent down to take a bite of the pizza, he noticed the sounds of music playing from the inner sections. He walked past the centre table and followed the sound of the music. The sound became louder as he approached.

“Florence,” he called once again as he approached the hallway. But then, he realized there was no use calling her name again. If she was in the room where the music was playing, there was no way she would hear someone calling her name.

He got to the front of the room and knocked twice but got no response. He turned the knob and pushed the door open to see an unusual sight.

His sister was naked and riding on a man with so much pleasure. The man was sitting at the edge of the bed with his feet on the floor and she was on him. His fingers squeezed her butt as she rode.

“Oh, shi*t! I didn’t see anything,” he shouted as he turned out of the room immediately, noticing the second glass of wine on the floor just beside the door. He closed the door and proceeded to the living room.

“Who the f**k is that!” the man yelled as Florence got up from his lap.

“That was my brother,” she answered and headed towards the bathroom.

The guy picked up the remote control to reduce the volume of the music. “Why don’t you let us finish up before you go to him?”

“Get dressed and get the hell out of there,” she yelled before closing the door to the bathroom.

He heaved a sigh of frustration and cursed in his mind. Florence’s brother or whoever he was could have just waited until they’d climaxed.

_

Lawrence settled in one of the sofas comfortably and took out his phone to keep himself busy. However, he didn’t even use the phone for up to a minute when thoughts of his sister flooded his mind. He smiled to himself.

Since she’d left high school and gone for military training, he had never seen her linked romantically with a man. The only few times he had seen her with men, they were either her superiors or colleagues and their conversation was always formal. It felt good seeing that she was just like every normal human.

Florence walked into the living room after keeping him waiting for three minutes. She had taken a shower and was dressed in bum shorts with a white sleeveless top.

“Hey, you guys are done already?” He asked as he saw her coming out from the hallway.

“Lawrence,” she called with a smile on her face. “What are you doing here?” she opened her arms wide for a hug.

He got up from his seat and walked into her hug.

“I’ve missed you, little brother,” she let out a breath and held on to him.

“Little brother is bigger than you now, sis,” Lawrence chuckled.

They disengaged and Florence stared at him in awe. “You’re really grown bigger in just a year. What have you been eating?”

“I’ve been eating everything,” Lawrence laughed. “I’ve not just grown bigger, I’m healthier.”

“Good to see you, bro…”

The man stepped out of the room at that moment. He was already dressed and had a backup strapped on.

“I’ll be heading out right now,” he said to Florence and acknowledged Lawrence with a nod as he made his way to the door.

“Hey, man,” Lawrence walked away from his sister’s front to meet the guy. “I’m Lawrence,” he introduced himself, stretching out his hand for a handshake.

“You can call be Ann,” the man replied.

“Ann?” Lawrence repeated the name to confirm.

“Yeah, Ann.”

“Your name is Ann?” Florence laughed from where she stood. “You have a woman’s name.”

Lawrence stared at his sister with a confused look, wondering what was happening. “Catch you later, man,” he patted the guy on the arm before walking back to meet his sister.

“Yeah,” Ann replied and proceeded out of the house.

Lawrence waited to hear the door close before talking. “Isn’t that your boyfriend?”

“Huh, boyfriend?” Florence scoffed. “Hell, no,” she picked up a slice of the pizza on the centre table and sat on a sofa.

Lawrence sat on the sofa close to him. “So, who was he? You didn’t even know his name.”

“He’s a guy I met on a dating app recently,” she revealed. “I only know his username. We met for the first time today.”

“What?” Lawrence’s jaw dropped in surprise and he laughed. “You met today and you f**king already?”

Florence ignored his question and continued to munch on the slice of pizza.

“Why did you leave the door unlocked?”

“Well, it happened so fast and I had no time to lock the door. Besides, no one ever comes here, so it didn’t occur to me that I needed to.”

Lawrence stared at his sister silently for a moment and then laughed. “I never knew you were someone for one-night stands.”

She ignored his question again. “Why are you here, Lawrence? How did you know I was back?”

“I was passing by and I saw a car parked outside the house. I thought you could be the one inside and decided to check.”

“I got back to town yesterday and heard you got out. How did it happen so early? You still had one year to go,” Florence stared at him in awe.

“I guess I improved faster than everyone thought,” Lawrence smiled.

“I’m so proud of you,” Florence said with a proud smile, staring into his eyes.

“You didn’t come to see me for over a year and you didn’t call too. I asked questions and I was told you were advised to reduce your contacts.”

“Yes, I was…” Florence replied. “But that wasn’t why I stopped calling.”

“Why?” Lawrence frowned. “When I got out and found out that you haven’t been in town for over a year, I was scared that something had happened to you. Your number was no longer connecting and none of your friends here ever heard of you.”

“I lost my device and everything I could use to retrieve the number. Unfortunately, the contact of the rehabilitation centre was not saved on my personal email. There was no way to reach you or anyone.”

“So, where were you?”

“It was work,” Florence smiled. “You know I can’t disclose the details of my work.”

“Oh! Okay,” Lawrence scoffed and got up to his feet. “I guess I was just being scared for nothing.”

“I was on a secret mission to bring down a gang,” Florence gave in. “I infiltrated as an undercover. The mission was tight, I had to disconnect myself from every personal relationship and build a new life for myself. It was in the process of keeping everything away from me that I lost my device.”

“How long will you be around for?” Lawrence asked.

“Maybe a few weeks or months,” she replied. “I’ll leave as soon as I’m called for another mission, but I sure have a few weeks to rest.”

“Okay,” he nodded gently and looked towards the door as if he was considering whether to leave or stay.

“Are you going somewhere else?” Florence asked, noticing his demeanour.

“Yeah, I need to meet with someone in forty minutes,” Lawrence answered after checking his wristwatch.

“Where are you meeting with the person?”

“Here in Deols.”

“So, why are you leaving so early? There’s not going to be traffic at this time of the day,” Florence remarked after checking her phone for the time.

“I want to show you something outside,” he replied.

“Oh!” She got up and wiped her moist palms on her shorts before following him.

She got out to see a Pagani Huayra BC parked behind her car. Her jaw dropped in shock.

“You drove this here?” She squinted at him. He nodded in affirmation. “Where the f**k did you get this from?”

“It’s not mine, it’s for my boss,” Lawrence answered.

“Where do you work?” She asked.

“A logistics, I just started. I’ve been training and trying to get back my flying license so that I can deliver items to other countries for them.”

“Huh?” She raised her brows for a moment and then narrowed her gaze on his face. “Do they know…”

“Yeah, they know everything, Florence. They know I’ve been in a rehabilitation centre after losing it to drugs. But I’m clean now. I’ve been sober for more than 2 years. So you’ve got nothing to worry about.”

“You’re saying they didn’t consider all of that before hiring you?” Florence was confused.

“Of course, they did. But my boss knows me well. He knows the death of my baby mama and first son led me into that and also knows I’m done with that life.”

“So, you think you’re gonna be able to get back your flying license?”

“I’m not the one working on it, my boss is,” Lawrence sounded confident. “He’s gonna help me get it because he’s adamant on making me one of the pilots as soon as possible. I think I’m gonna have it very soon.”

Florence let out a breath and stayed silent for a moment. “Who’s your boss?”

“He’s a Zambian businessman and philanthropist. They call him Jonah.”

“I got to know more about this your boss, but I guess there’s no reason to rush. Will you call me later today?”

“Yes, sure,” Lawrence replied and then took out his phone. He unlocked it and opened the dialler before handing it over to her to type in her number.

“There’s so much we need to catch up on,” Florence said as she handed the phone back to him. “Make sure you call me.”

“I will as soon as I’m through. I apologise for interrupting you and Ann earlier,” he said with a mischievous smile before turning to get into the car.

She watched him start the engine and drive off with a smile on her face. It felt good to see her brother again. He was the only family member she had left. Four years ago, she had almost lost him to drugs after he became addicted when his baby mama and son were killed by stray bullets.

Now that he seemed well again, she remembered the promise her dying Mom made her make. She was to protect her brother no matter what it costs. It seemed life had given her the chance to protect him again after he bounced out of drug addiction.

30 Minutes Later

Deols, El Deols

“Hey, Lawrence,” Jonah hailed as he walked out to meet Lawrence who had been waiting for him.

“Good day, Mr Jonah,” Lawrence bowed slightly, holding up the key to the car.

“How did you enjoy your ride in it?” Jonah asked with a smile.

“It was great,” Lawrence smiled. “I love fast cars.”

“Would you like to have one like that?”

Lawrence paused for a while and turned back to look at the car. “Of course, I would like to. But it was damn expensive. I can’t even afford the regular cars at the moment.”

“What if I told you that that car could be yours?”

Lawrence widened his eyes. “Huh?”

“Yeah, if you pass our probation period after you start flying, it could be yours. All our pilots use the best cars.”

Lawrence could not believe his ears. He stared at the car once again and looked at Jonah’s face. “Are you serious about this, sir?”

“Of course, I don’t make silly jokes.”

“Hahaha…I can’t wait to get my license and start working sir,” Lawrence expressed his excitement.

“About that,” Jonah cleared his throat. “I’ve got something for you.”

He reached into the inner pocket of his suit jacket and took out an envelope. “We got your license back, so you can start work immediately.”

Lawrence widened his eyes in shock. He had gotten too many surprises today. His hands were shaking as he took the envelope from Jonah.

“I don’t believe this, sir. How did you get it done?”

“It was just a few calls, my friend.”

Lawrence got overwhelmed with emotions as he looked into the letter reissuing his license and the card. Tears rolled down his eyes as he thought he’d never fly a plane again. There was no other way to describe this than to call it a miracle.

“It’s okay, my friend,” Jonah placed a hand on Lawrence’s shoulder and patted him.

19:00

Florence had just finished cooking and was dishing it out on a plate when her phone rang. She quickly dropped the spoon and reached for the phone on the kitchen slap. The call was from an unsaved number and she hoped it was Lawrence as she expected.

“Hello,” she answered the call eagerly.

“Hi, Sis.”

“Oh! Lawrence, why are you just calling? I’ve been expecting to hear from you since. I made dinner for the both of us. Can you come over?”

“I’m sorry, sis. I can’t come back tonight.”

“Oh! Okay,” Florence was disappointed. “But can we get to see tomorrow? We’ve got a lot of things to talk about.”

“Ermmm… I can make a brief stop tomorrow, sister. But I can’t assure you that I’ll have enough time for us to talk.”

“Why?”

“I’m starting work tomorrow, Sis. I’ve got my license back.”

“How’s that possible?” Florence was confused. “How can it happen so quickly?”

“My boss made it work, I got the license after meeting with him today and I’m starting work tomorrow.”

“But you’re not going to fly yet, are you?” Florence questioned. “You’ve not been flying for more than three years. You still have to take a refresher course or something like that.”

“I’ve been doing that since I got out, sis. I’ve studied the new plane models and engines. I’m good to go.”

Florence sighed. She didn’t know what to think. Everything seemed to be happening so fast.

“Okay, I guess I’ll see you tomorrow. Make sure you stop by.”

___

Lawrence stopped by the next day as he promised. He got there in the morning and he was dressed in corporate wear. Florence had just woken up when he knocked.

“Lawrence,” she called in a sleepy tone as she opened the door for him.

“Good morning, Sis,” he walked right into the house. “I’m starting work today, how do I look?” He asked as he turned to show himself to her.

“Sharp as always,” she remarked.

“Thank you,” he said with a bright smile.

Florence smiled back. She was having doubts about his job and how fast everything was happening but seeing him smile melted her heart. He had not looked so happy for several years.

“Would you be able to wait for breakfast?” She asked as she walked past him.

“No, I don’t have that much time.”

“What of coffee? It’ll be ready in less than 3 minutes,” she offered.

“That will do,” he accepted. “We can talk while you make it.”

He followed her to the kitchen.

“So, what did you call your boss’ name again?”

“Jonah.”

“You said he’s Zambian.”

“Yeah, he is. But he runs a logistics company here.”

“What are their major delivery products?”

“They deal in everything, different types of goods.”

“What’s your boss’ full name?”

“He’s Jonah.”

“He doesn’t have a surname?” She looked at him.

“He’s Jonah Jonah,” Lawrence answered. “Why are you asking so many questions?”

“Well, I just wanna know.”

“You don’t have to bother about me, sis. You can come check out the company at the office if you want.”

“Maybe I’ll do that,” Florence replied. She handed him his cup of coffee and then poured some into a mug for herself.

They proceeded to the living room together.

“So, when are we going to have enough time to talk?”

“I can make time by the weekend,” he replied.

“Okay, that’ll be good.”

He took out a piece of paper from his pocket and handed it to his sister. “There you have the company’s name and address.”

“Thank you, I’ll check it out,” she smiled.

Four minutes after he left, Florence already began to check out the company on the internet. She had read so much about the company before switching to learn about the founder.

She was still on it when her phone rang. A frown appeared on her face as she saw who the caller was. She took in a deep breath before answering the call.

“Good morning, sir.”

“Florence, you need to return to Husan right away…”

“Sir?”

“You heard me, Florence. Get back here immediately.”

“Sir, I’m entitled to a two weeks minimum break after a long mission. I’ve just had three days.”

“The break is after the job is done, not when it’s unfinished.”

Florence frowned, wondering why the man said the job was unfinished. “I don’t understand, sir.”

“Someone in your team messed up. Your name is still registered with the Illinios organization and you’re still wanted as one of the Cupe Bandits. Two of your team members were arrested by the FOX yesterday after getting tips from some external Cupe bandit members that haven’t been caught. That means there’s still more work to be done.”

Florence heaved a sigh of frustration.

“I’ll be sending a car to pick you up at the location in an hour.”

Her shoulders dropped as she fell back in the chair. She’d never thought for a minute that she’ll have to return so suddenly. All her plans of spending time with her brother would no longer work. It had to wait until she was back again, hopefully in a few weeks.

She picked up her phone and opened the call register to dial her brother’s number but she changed her mind. She opened the text messaging app instead. There she explained that she needed to make an urgent trip and also typed in an email for him to reach her urgently.

____

Two weeks later, Florence was still in Husan when she got the second mail from her brother. The first time they exchanged emails after she travelled, he had sent her pictures of himself in the plane flying again.

This time, it wasn’t a pleasant mail. Lawrence seemed to be in trouble and mentioned that some men were holding him hostage after forcing him to move drugs in the company’s plane. He mentioned in the mail that he was going to be on a trip to exchange some goods in Bethanna and sent her the location he would land in. That location was in Vints ground.

Florence abandoned her job and defied her superiors. She joined a plane to Bethanna immediately, a trip which later led to her dismissal.

She got to Bexford and made her way towards the location she got from her brother’s email. Unfortunately, her brother was dead before she could make any intervention.

To be continued

NB: We’ll move on to the other parts of the story. Can’t explore details in the flashback as it would take a lot of time. I’ll try to provide summaries of the important parts though.

Yes I know it can be frustrating reading a story for years but he is trying to be considerate here and not prolonging the whole thing anymore, atleast let's appreciate that. If he did not post these flashbacks there is no how we would understand the relationship between Rex, Carl and Florence…..so please let's all take a chill pill. We can all see he is putting in effort to end this as soon as possible and it would not make sense if he rush it to the extent that we would not understand anything again.
