Chapter 16 – Time to pay!

“You there, Eva?” Eric asked again, expecting a reply from her but he got none.

Liam’s lifeless body laid on the floor after Eric had fired a bullet into his forehead. This was after making him lock the front door to the living room. The front door being locked will prevent the guards from entering and discovering that their boss was dead while Eric and Eva escaped through the side door.

Eric continued towards the place, even without getting a response from Eva.

“Are you connected to Eva?” He asked, expecting a reply from the team on the outside.

“Not yet,” the reply came.

“Can you try to find her location in the Mansion or get her to speak with you?” Eric requested as he proceeded to the exit.

It took him a minute to get to the door. He met it open and stepped out into the verandah. The garden was just opposite the door and the bulletproofed car was parked close. He could see his driver already waiting by the car, signalling that he got the keys.

“Master, I think something has gone wrong. She’s still in that study,” the voice in Eric’s earpiece sounded. “The bodyguards are beginning to act suspicious and may try to come in soon.”

“f**k!” Eric cursed as he turned back quickly and headed for the study. It took him a minute to get back through the living room and to the study. He was surprised to see Eva in tears, trying to help the bleeding kid. She had taken off the young boy’s cloth and was trying to suppress the bleeding.

“What the f**k do you think you’re trying to do?” Eric scoffed.

“He’s gonna die,” Eva stammered and looked at him with teary eyes.

“We gotta get out of here, now,” Eric dragged her away from the body. He took a second to check the young man’s state. “He’s gonna get help from the guards,” he said as he turned back to Eva. “Now, where’s the f***ing document?”

Eva pointed to where she had placed the file and Eric stepped in to take it.

“You gotta get out of there, boss,” Eric heard a warning in his earpiece. “The guards suspect foul and they’re trying to get in already. They would come through the side if they can’t get in through the front door.”

“Let’s go,” Eric pulled Eva who was still staring at the young boy tearfully. He dragged her along as he ran through the hallway.

They got to the exit in less than one minute and climbed down the balcony to get into the bulletproofed vehicle.

Just as they got into the car, three guards turned from the front of the building to the side where they were. One of them held up his gun and approached the car, pointing his gun while the two others headed for the open entrance.

The driver started the car engine and accelerated towards the guy pointing the gun. He fired shots at the vehicle as he ran to escape the hit but the bullets couldn’t pierce through the protected windscreen.

A few seconds after the vehicle had driven off, the two guards who had gone in rushed back out.

“Those f****ng retards are assassins, they killed Mr Liam and Mrs Emily,” one of them shouted.

“Get the f****ng car!” the other one screamed as he took out a communicator to alert the other nineteen guards around the mansion. But before they could make any reasonable move, an explosion rocked the air, sending them flying to the ground.

The bomb planted in the limousine they left behind had just gone off. The explosion was going to keep the guards who had discovered Liam and Emily’s death busy. It was also going to take off the other guard’s attention from the moving bulletproofed vehicle.

The duo remained in silence all through the escape trip. They got to Eric’s house in Gungahlin, Canberra in a new car after two hours. They had discarded the stolen car thirty minutes into the trip.

Eva did not look so good as her mind was split in two directions. First, she couldn’t stop thinking about Liam Jnr whom she had shot out of panic. As Eric had said, the gun wound was not so bad and there was a possibility he would survive if he got help quickly.

Secondly, she didn’t know what Eric was going to do to her for almost ruining the escape plan. His silence and occasional glares at her had made it worse.

She knew she had just proven that she was unfit for the Clan with her actions. And she remembered that Eric promised to erase her himself if he ever found out she was unfit. But why he hadn’t killed her before they got to the safe house was what she didn’t understand. Or was he planning to make her death painful?

Immediately after the car stopped in the car park, Eric got out and walked into the house without a word to her or the driver.

Eva heaved a sigh as she was alone in the car for a while. His presence with her had caused so much tension for her. She didn’t know what her fate was yet but she still felt relieved that he had left her side.

“We’re here, ma’am,” the driver reminded her when she remained in the car a minute after he parked. “I want to lock the cars, so you step out now.”

It felt strange for a moment as Eva opened the door to step out. For the past forty hours when “James Cooper” had been her husband, she didn’t have to open the door herself. He always did the opening like a gentleman.

She stared at the safe house in silence for a while and death came to her mind. Even though it was night, she could still see how ugly the bungalow looked. Eric had told her about the place before and how they weren’t going to return to the hotel suite after the mission. The safe house was indeed in an isolated area just like he described.

It took her almost three minutes of walking sluggishly to get into Eric’s apartment. Inside it was a completely different world. It was a large studio apartment, beautiful and well furnished. Eric was already taking off his clothes when she got in. He still had his singlet and trousers on.

She approached him slowly.

He paused and looked at her. “You need to take off your clothes, we’re going to burn them together with mine.”

She stopped and seemed sluggish about taking off her clothes. He noticed and looked at her.

“You can go use the bathroom, put your clothes in the basket you find there. I’ll put mine there too,” he suggested. “Ensure you scrub the tiniest particle from your body. You’ll find a towel in the bathroom for you. There are clothes for you to change into in this wardrobe.”

Eva decided to take his suggestion and turned immediately. She walked into the bathroom and stepped out fifteen minutes later with a white towel wrapped around her chest.

Eric was also undressed but still had his boxers on. For the first time, she noticed his well-built chest and six-pack abs. He looked damn hot and sexy that he made her hold her breath for a second.

He also couldn’t take his eyes off her as she looked like someone else entirely in the towel. Like an innocent Angel who needed to be protected and loved.

Their eyes locked for a moment and there seemed to be some exchange of energy between them. However, Eric was the first to snap out of the moment.

“I need to wash my body now,” he said as he wrapped his towel around his neck. He picked the clothes he took off and headed for the bathroom.

He was out in six minutes and was surprised to meet Eva still dressed in her towel. She had taken out two carpetbags from the wardrobe but wasn’t sure of which one had her clothes. He knew her dilemma immediately he saw the bags.

“The heavier one is yours,” he explained.

She picked the bags in both hands and identified the heavier one. She returned the lighter one and opened hers. After looking through for a moment, she picked out a robe for the night.

But she had one problem, how was she going to dress with him in the room? Maybe she just had to use the bathroom again, she thought.

Just as she turned to go into the bathroom, she spotted Eric standing at the table with a pistol. He was about to fix a cartridge into it.

She let out a breath. How could she have forgotten that she messed up earlier? Now it was time to pay for her mistakes. She wished her death would be as peaceful as possible.
