  • MADALITSO – Episode 5

A story by Jochrine Kunda

We talked about different stuff for some time but my mind would drift off to grandma and suggested we tried the number, I dialled the number and put it on loudspeaker then the lady answered

Lady: Mrs Kangwa speaking, how may I help you?

“Mmmmm she’s Zambian,” I said to myself

Me: I’m the girl answered your call the day you called grandma on her line

Lady Prin…..m…my…b..ba

I could hear fear in her voice then a man in the background asked her what the problem was and he took over

Man: who is this?

Me: I’m Madalitso

My phone beeped indicating that my battery was low

Man: Princess we’re……..

Me: No I’m not Princess, I’m Madalitso my gra….

Man: Princess calm down we need………

Me: I’m not Princess Sir (I said with a firm voice)

There was silence at the other end and I kept asking him if he could get me until I gave up and looked at the phone which was off

Me: God, its off!!!

Saint handed me his battery in no time then tried the number again which couldn’t get through, I suddenly had a strange feeling then felt a sharp pain in my chest

Me: I feel like something bad is going to happen

The guys helped me sit on a bench

**NARRATED**

An eight inch, silver stiletto touched the ground and there she was in a black glittery bum short and matching vest, Gucci sunglasses on and her lips glittered as the sun touched them then she flipped her Brazilian weave and smiled pricelessly as she cat walked to Mrs Musonda’s house entering without knocking

Linda: what nonsense is going on here?

Mrs Musonda: I’ll pardon your manners this once

Linda: its been six stupid months and that woman back home is still depleting oxygen

She was flipping her hands as if she found it difficult to breath

Mrs Musonda: that woman has a strong spirit, do you see how wasted I look all thanks to her? I’m always fighting her day and night

Linda: so that simply means you’ve failed, I’ll look for assistance elsewhere

She attempted to walk out

Mrs Musonda: you know that’s an offence

Linda: to hell with that, I won’t sit back and watch your losing self

Mrs Musonda: rrelax

She did her incantations and handed Linda a black powder

Mrs Musonda: since you’re so impatient, you’ll do the final touch and she won’t see tomorrow at this stage she’s reached

Linda: now you’re talking

Mrs Musonda: BUT (she had a horrifying look)

Linda: what?

Mrs Musonda: you’ll have to do it before that girl you live with returns home

Linda: Madalitso?

Mrs Musonda: exactly

Linda: no problem, I can lock the door even if she’s around

Mrs Musonda: NO!!!! her presence shouldn’t be anywhere near that house or this whole thing back fires. Linda, don’t let me down I didn’t eat my child’s heart to fall on an easy mission like this

Linda: I hear you, let me get going then

She stood up in a hurry ready to leave but was stopped at the door

Mrs Musonda: you’ve already started making mistakes even before you leave

Linda: huh?

Mrs Musonda: did I tell you how to use it?

Linda: ohhh!!! (returning to her seat)

Mrs Musonda: blow the black powder in her nostrils and at this point everything is irreversible so think twice before you finally decide on taking her life, dear one

She nodded and left Mrs Musonda’s house in a hurry boarding a taxi and instructed the driver to drive like a maniac, she got home and found Tapiwa washing the dishes. Tapiwa noticed Linda’s strange behaviour and curiosity told her to keep close tabs on her then she called her

Linda: Tapiwa, you’re always home and look bored so get this money and go do some shopping, make sure you also get a new weave coz you look like an old woman

The smile on Tapiwa’s face was priceless so she went to her bedroom to change and grabbed her phone while Linda stood in the passage waiting for her to leave, she escorted her and out and locked the main gate…

**NARRATED**

Tapiwa left the yard and reached the corner of their street and sat down because something didn’t sit well with her

Tapiwa: nothing’s adding up here, that witch can’t stand my presence yet today she gives me money for shopping and makes sure I’m out then locks the gate. I’ll have to see what she’s up to, that’s what she’ll get for mistreating me

She quickly ran to the next street because she remembered Madalitso telling her that the gate was open then she got in and hid in the kitchen, she heard walking in the passage as the sound of her heels gave her away, she watched her go to grandma’s bedroom. “Maybe they wanted to have a mother to daughter talk and feared I might disturb, let me just go its none of my business,” Tapiwa said to herself and got up to leave but the uneasy feeling she had grew stronger

Tapiwa: this curiosity I have will get me killed one day

She tip toed in the passage and reached grandma’s bedroom and the door was slightly opened, the bitterness on Linda’s face scared her but she was still brave enough to take out her phone and take a video

IN THE BEDROOM

Linda: mother, mother, mother dearest wake up already I’m tired of starring at you sleeping comfortably like you own the world

Grandma: I knew you were behind this you devil

Linda grabbed a chair and sat crossing her legs with arms folded

Linda: this is the last time you scold me, spit out nonsense, belittle me coz that’s what led you here

Grandma: its really a waste of breath talking to you

Linda laughed out loud

Linda: kanshi you know that you’re dying to even treasure every breath you take

Grandma: Linda, I curse the day I gave birth to you, you’ll never find peace even in death

Linda: with Robert I’ll have everything I need and peace will just be an additional blessing

Grandma: you can keep day dreaming about Robert but know that in reality he’s NEVER being with you no matter what charm you use on him and your downfall (she chuckled) will be like a forsaken dog and all this will come true because I, the woman who carried you for nine months, fed you, nursed you, showed you love and made sacrifices for you have spoken.

Linda: what sacrifices have you ever made coz all you did was support Lindiwe

Grandma: I’ve never told you this before but I think I should, when giving birth to you the chances of you surviving were slim and one of us had to die so the other would live and I chose for your life to be saved but the God I serve is great and we both made it

Linda felt bad for her actions but then thought of the consequences of backing down

Linda: mom, will I go to jail for this if I let you live?

Grandma: I’ll be honest with you, no sin goes unpaid you’ll have to serve your sentence but I’m willing to forgive you with an open heart then once your sentence is over we can be the happy family that we’ve never been

She shook her head countless times

Linda: boring speech mother, I think I should just sacrifice you already for the beginning of my legacy

Grandma: the choice is yours and your daughter’s days are numbered if she doesn’t change her ways

She took the black powder placing some on her palm and walked to her mother’s bed then blew the powder in her nostrils and she coughed badly

Linda: open up your veins and relax, it works quicker that way

Grandma screamed Madalitso’s name then took her last breath and Linda couldn’t stop laughing, Tapiwa almost dropped her phone due to shock and quickly ran out of the house and went out closing the backyard gate behind her, Linda also left going to seek pleasure from one of her buddies

MADALITSO

After I was calm tears started gushing down face and I didn’t know why, I told the guys that I had a strange feeling and they told me to stay at the park a bit more till I was fine but I declined because I wanted to be with grandma, the whole park idea seemed like a waste of time that day and we left. I got home and the place was quiet

Me: Tapiwa I’m back (there was no response)

I went to check on her in the bedroom and found the clothes she wore on the bed “mmm, that’s a first,” I said to myself. I went to grandma’s room and in the passage I felt cold air sending shivers to my spine, I got in and she was motionless with her eyes popped out not blinking and she showed no sign of breathing

Me: NOOOOOOOO (it was lights out for me)

To be continued…

  1. Linda is a she devil, calling her a muderer is an understatement. Not even minding all the curses from her mother
