LINA

I played with the hem of my dress, my finger nails and I kept blabbing about random events. The driver was even tired of me I’m sure so when we arrived at the place, I handed him his fee and he drove off quickly.

Taking two sharp breaths, I briskly walked into the bar. It was fairly classy and the bartenders were cleaning up the place.

“We’re not open until six pm ma’am.”

A bartender said behind me.

“Umm I’m not actually here for that. A…. Friend of mine is here and I got a call to get him.”

I gulped at the word “friend” In reference to Stefan. It didn’t seem quite right.

“Ohh. He’s in the other room resting.”

“Thank you.”

I nodded my head as he gave directions which I followed.

I drew the curtains and Stefan was sprawled on the couch. He wore the same outfit as yesterday which meant two things. He didn’t go home or he did and left immediately. His phone was ringing. Daniella was calling. I ignored it and proceeded to trying to wake him up

“Stefan.”

I called out touching his shoulders.

“Huh?”

He murmured.

“Stefan, it’s Lina. Wake up.”

I called out still tapping him.

“Lina’s gone.”

He says still shutting his eyes. Those words broke my heart.

“No, I’m right here.”

“You’re not. You’re gone. I lost you.”

His voice sounded like a lost child. So fragile.

“Stefan. I’m right here. Look at me.”

I stood in front of me and his eyes fluttered open.

“Lina.”

He breathed out blinking his eye lids.

“Yeah. It’s me. We have to go now.”

“How? Why are you here?”

“Why did you drink so much?”

I asked ignoring his question.

“I wanted to forget.”

He responded coldly tucking his phone into his pocket.

“Ohh.”

I retorted as he got up from the couch. I shifted back awkwardly.

“You shouldn’t be here. I’m sure Ethan must be worried.”

He says clearly sarcastic. I arched my brow slightly scoffing.

“You know what. Screw this. I can’t believe I even came. I’m so stupid.”

I scoffed once again standing up to leave.

“I’m sorry. Don’t go.”

He said defensively.

“Let’s go.”

I responded coldly. He trailed behind me and we both left the bar.

“Keys. I’m driving.”

I demanded. He furrowed his brows.

“You’re not driving in this state. Hand them over.”

He reached into his pockets and reluctantly gave them.

“Good.”

I responded confidently although I haven’t held a steering wheel in years. Maybe I’m the drunk one here.

My photographic memory came into good use as I remembered every lesson and got him home safely.

“How are you going to get….”

He stopped him clearly cringing at the thought of calling Ethan’s place “home”

“I’ll hail a cab. It’s none of your business anyways.”

“Lina…”

“Don’t. I just didn’t want you to get into trouble. It doesn’t change a thing between us. Good luck Stefan. Goodbye.”

The front door opened. Daniella rushed out and jumped into his arms. I turned around, walking away quickly.

“You slut!”

She yelled loud enough for me to hear.

“Don’t!”

I heard Stefan’s voice caution. I shivered where I stood. He sounded dangerous. I forced myself not turn back although I wanted to. Now, it’s time to get back to moving on. New apartment, new job.

“One call and you’ll go running back.”

My inner voice meddled.

“Not this time.”

I said meaning every word.
