“Come on Lian!” Leon said and jumped of his stool.

“What for Leon, lemme finish dinner,” I whined like the six year old I am and began sipping my condensed fruit milk, making slurping sounds to irritate him.

“To activate our plan, stupid!”

“Hey, I’m not stupid!” I pouted.

“Of course you are, baby!”

“I’m not a baby!” I was about to cry. Leon was a big meanie and sometimes I begged mommy to just take him and put him back on her stomach while I’ll sew it up and he’ll never have to come out and bother me again! But mommy would only laugh and hug me to herself.

“If you’re not then —”

“No, say sorry Lian first!”

He just picked up my plate of unfinished dinner alongside his empty own and dumped them in the sink and stuck his tongue out at me.

“Leon you’re mean! You can’t order me around.”

“Course I can. I’m the eldest.”

“By three minutes!”

“Yup. But come on, we gotta get started on the pictures in mommy’s phone, and then the phone numbers and everything before aunt Wendy arrives.”

“Oh.”

I jumped off my stool and waddled behind him to Mommy’s room, he took out the phone from under the mattress and switched it on.

“Okay, this is the phone number, write it down,” said Leon.

“Why do I have to!?”

“Why do you have to complain about everything?”

“Why do you—”

“Fine, I’ll write it!”

He scribbled out the number in his chicken scratch handwriting which I laughed at and he frowned at me.

Then we heard the doorbell.

“Aunt Wendy, hurry!”

We offed the phone and kept it inside one of mommy’s bags so that it’ll seem she forgot it, and Leon dashed out leaving me behind.

Ugh…annoying twin.

“Hey little rascals,” Wendy said when we opened the door.

“Hi Wendy!” we chorused with innocent grins from which nobody could suspect whatever we’re up to.

Rubbing my arms that were bare to the cold due to the short sleeved shirt I wore, I sent a nervous glance in Jack’s direction.

So I was making show to the twins, because somehow I was so not ready for this date tonight.

For one, I paid a taxi to get here when he could’ve been a gentleman and picked me up like Emilio does. That’s a whole $50 gone!

Secondly, the restaurant was too…uncomfort

able! I mean, look at the ceiling. So…spotted! And the table linen….so…..linen-ish. And the food, so….foodish! Emilio would’ve picked the perfect eat out with the perfect ceiling and table linen and the perfect food.

And third to go, I think I’m beginning to see that Leon and Lian were right! Jack’s teeth looked kinda big for his mouth and —

“Hey, Anne. Something wrong?” he asked glancing at me as he forked grille into his mouth…ewww, teeth!

“Uhm, nothing. Nothing. Everything’s alright in fact. Super!” I grinned.

He chuckled. “OK OK, no need to get over excited.”

Overexcited, me!? I’m actually looking for a way to bail out right now.

“Bail out?” Jack asked.

Uh oh, did I say that out loud?

“Um, yeah. Bail out the uh….the kids. They’re locked up at home by accident. I gotta go get them out,” I said and made to stand up with my bag but his hand over mine stopped me.

“Anne stay pls. We haven’t even gone anywhere on this second date of ours,” he whispered.

Swallowing and thinking how long I had to pretend to enjoy something I clearly didn’t, I sat back and picked on my food.

“So I’m really glad that you came with me.”

Gosh, he was staring at me in a freaking weird way. Spookish. Emilio would have — hold on. Why am I suddenly thinking of and comparing everything Jack to Emilio? Ugh, get a grip girl. I can’t possibly still be in love with him, that would be crazy. Totally nuts.

“Anne? Are you OK?”

“Huh? Oh, yes. Yes. Perfect in fact.”

“But I’ve been talking for the past five minutes and you haven’t replied or made a show of listening to anything I said. Did you even hear anything I said?”

I sighed and dropped my fork. “To be honest Jack, I don’t feel too good. I’ve got this really bad ulcer in my feet.”

“Ulcer in your feet?”

“Did I say feet? Ha ha ha gee, it’s the headache. I’m stressed out. As you can see I’m still in my work clothes!”

“I noticed.”

“And that’s why I’ll head home now. Ohh, this head….” I placed a palm over my head which was perfectly fine and pretended to wince as I stood up.

“Sorry in that case let me take you home —”

“No, it’s fine. I’ll take a cab.”

“I insist.”

Mentally I rolled my eyes and scoffed at him. So now he was acting the perfect gentleman?

Humph!

He led me to his car with me pretending to walk slowly, and he entered the driver’s seat and started the car.

“Are you alr—”

“I’m not alright. Get me home already.”

He drove to my house and we arrived there faster than if I’d actually taken a taxi.

“Thank you…”

He cut me off by placing an index finger under my chin.

Oh no, the kiss!

Leon and Lian said I was gonna get diarrhoea if I kissed him because his teeth kept his mouth open granting access to flies which could transfer to my mouth.

Big fat lie, but in this moment it all seemed true.

I don’t wanna kiss this guy.

“Ouch….my head!” I said and turned away.

“Sorry Anne.”

“Yes……good night sir.” I got out of the car.

“It’s Jack, we’re on first name terms now.”

“Whatever,” I hissed and slammed the door shut and walked into my house without a backward look.

“Argh, Felipe! Take your carbon copy away from my work desk. I’m working!”

“I’m not disturbing uncle, or am I?” Markus, Felipe and Sophia’s four year old son asked in slow baby talk, smiling to show his four incisors and smaller set of teeth.

“No you aren’t, you little gangster,” I said, but sent a dagger glare to Felipe who was sitting on the opposite chair pretending to be absorbed in reading a news paper.

The damned thing was turned upside down!

“But listen, uncle’s kind of busy right now. So why don’t you little gangster run over and play with papà, hmm?”

The boy let out a grin and dashed for his father who happily carried him on his lap, laughing and cooing.

Who thought Felipe could be the father type?

He and Sophia had given birth to their first child, this Markus whom I called gangster a year after they got married.

Cosima and Augusto didn’t happen to be the family type. More like the fun types who loved travelling about. Well I don’t blame them. None of them knew how it felt to have to make the most of all life had to offer, knowing that it could all be taken away in the blink of an eye. Or maybe they did, but had a different way of reacting to it.

Well I’ve been there.

Loosing Anne six years ago esp as she was pregnant with our child wasn’t something I’d planned. Though I expected it, I didn’t.

But I haven’t given up on her. Even though she seemed to have vanished off the face of the earth.

“Guys, Prudence’s made supper before bedtime,” Sophia announced from the doorway.

“Mama,” Markus said and toddled over to her and she scooped him up.

“OK, we’ll be down in a bit,” Felipe replied.

“Go on, I’ll be with you shortly.”

“No, you’re coming with me right away!”

“Felipe have you forgotten who’s boss around here?” I asked.

“Eh, no. Neither have I forgotten that I’m your friend. Stop wearing yourself out because of—”

“No, I’m prepping for a meeting I and my board members have in New York with the Gunther America tomorrow before you start preaching. Go on. I’ll join you.”

He sighed and walked out.

I picked up my phone, staring at a photo of Anne and I.

I’m not giving up on you no matter what.

“And you’re right. The date went badly,” I said and poffed my hair up in a bun for preparation for bedtime.

The kids were already asleep.

“Thanks for watching over them for me.”

“Oh, you can count on me anytime,” Wendy replied with a smile. “Listen Anne. I’ll advice you to stop deceiving yourself that —”

“Et et et, Wen. Don’t go no further. Yawn, I’m sleepy.”

She sighed and picked up her bag and went out the door. “Good night then.”

“You too, and thanks again.”

I closed the door and entered the twins room.

They were snoring lightly on their twin bed.

Aww, if you knew mommy listened to and believed your stories about Jack Gunther, you’ll jump up and give me a hug,” I whispered.

And suddenly, they jumped up and gave me a hug!

“Yay mommy!” they said.

Laughing, I hugged them back.

These kids!
