Mara sighed for the umpteenth time, she was bored to death, her sister had gone to school leaving her all alone in the room, and there was no power supply, her sister really made use of all the money sent to her, her room was just nice, pink painting, typical of a girl, 24 inches flat screen plasma television, 14 inches foam kept at a corner, mini fridge, home theatre, and a big mirror adorned the room. she sighed and fell back on the foam. If not that she wanted to spend sometime with her sister, she would have gone to lodge in a hotel, she checked her phone and saw that her father had not even called her since she left the house, what kind of a father does that? she wondered. did she do a bad thing by telling him to bail her mother? well if he would not call her then she wouldn’t go home either.

“Big sis, am home” Kosi said entering inside.

“Thank God you are back, I was so bored” she said hitting her hand on her head.

“The power supply was not restored after I left for school?” she asked removing her sneakers.

“No, and it was killing me inside” Mara complained again.

“Did you cook anything?, am starving” she asked letting out a laugh.

“Yea, I boiled rice, the stew from yesterday is still remaining” she answered checking her phone again.

“Can you stop doing that already?, checking your phone won’t make Dad call you, I mean he has not even called me since he learnt that I stayed back here in school, all he does is to send me money, he doesn’t even care about us” she said going into the compartment they used as kitchen.

“I was just trying to unite our family again, with mom still in prison I don’t see unity anywhere around our house, I can’t even build that mother and daughter relationship with Aunty Margaret, she doesn’t even recognize me, I miss Mom and everything she did for us, how she stocks up our rooms with sanitary pads, saying that it shouldn’t be looked for in a lady’s room, how she tells us that we should be contented with what we have, how she gives us advice on relationship with the opposite sex, can you remember what she did when she found out that you had a boyfriend, you were just 18 then, she threatened to bring heaven down, threatened fire and brimstone saying that you were still underaged” she stopped letting out a little giggle.

“Aunty Margaret doesn’t even know the date my period normally start, she has not even noticed that am having problems with Kenny, she does not even talk to me, the people she only recognize and talk to is Aunty Felicia and her daughter Brenda and she is not even around, she went to see her boyfriend for the past one week, I have not even seen her, am just all alone in that house” she concluded sighing.

“You have to give Aunty Margaret some time sis, you know what she passed through in the hands of my mom, I can’t even believe that mom could do such things, I mean if not that she confessed those things herself, I would never believe such things about her ever” she said taking one spoon full of rice in her mouth.

“I don’t know Kosi, I just don’t know where to start from, I don’t know when Aunty Margaret’s memory will be back, I need a mom, i need someone I can talk to, am passing through a lot right now” she said bending her head in tiredness.

“Start by calling her Mom, she is your mother and nothing can change the fact, she will soon regain her memory just give her time, remember, mom caused all the things happening in her life right now, show her love, show her that she can also get love from you” Kosi said standing to get water from the fridge. “And speaking of Kenny he called me on phone the other day” she completed closing back the fridge.

“What did he say?” Mara asked shooting her head up.

“Well nothing much, he told me that he came over to the house and you refused to see him, that you also refused taking his call even, then he said that I should go back home, that’s all” she concluded looking at her sister.

“Yes, I refused to see him, he knew all these things and he never told me, he knew who my biological mother was and he didn’t tell me, he knew that mom was behind it all and he didn’t still tell me, all he could come up with was that he did it to protect me, what stupid protection is that?, he proposed to me and I threw his ring back at him, I hate him so much right now, he is among those causing me pains” she winced as she said those words.

“Don’t be like that sis, he loves you so much, he was just waiting for the right time to tell you, I see the way he looks at you, he adores you sis, please forgive him, don’t loose that man, he is nice” she concluded eyeing her sister, she wouldn’t want another in-law other than Kenny, the guy was good, he sends her money at interval.

“I will try call him Later in the day, right now am trying to think” she said lying down on the bed.

“What if I tell you that he will be here today” she said running towards the door to avoid getting a slap from her sister.

“What? you told him that am here, oh my god Kosi I feel like beating you to a pulp right now” she shouted Standing on her feet.

“Am sorry sis but he was so worried, I had no option” she said still standing at the doorway.

“oh my god, I have not bathed, what will I wear now?” she said running around the room. “Are you still standing there? come and help me pick a dress” she said when she noticed that her sister had not moved an inch from where she stood.

“Are you sure sis? should I really come and help you out? are you sure you won’t hit me?” she said tiptoeing back into the room.

“My friend get your head over here right now or else I will leave the dishes for you” she said laughing, she knew how much her sister hated doing the dishes, she wasn’t wrong because Kosi rushed straight to the wardrobe and started bringing out different clothes. she laughed again, she really loved her sister whether they had different mothers or not and it was time to take her home.

James woke up and found himself in the hospital, he looked around and found Gabriel seated at a corner. he called out his name and Gabriel startled.

“Are you okay bro? do you need anything?” he asked rushing to the bedside.

“Am fine, where is the doctor? I need to be discharged” he said sitting up.

“the doctor said that you will have to rest very well, your injury has opened because you didn’t get the right medication for it, you will have to stay a little while here”

“I need to send my parents far away from here until am done with the case” he said coughing a bit.

“don’t worry about your parents, I sent them to Lagos to stay with my dad, just relax and get enough rest, you need it”.

“Thank you so much bro, I appreciate” he said relaxing his back on the edge of the bed.

“We got another news bro, Taiwo Segun has been killed, Anny is at it again” he said shaking his head.

“What? when? how?” James shouted weakly.

“I don’t know how it happened but he was found dead in his room with a syringe stabbed deeply into his neck, no sign of blood, no finger prints, after we carried out our investigation, we found out that there was a deadly poison in the syringe which killed him slowly” he concluded sighing loudly.

” I need to leave this place Gabriel, things are going wrong, she needs to be stopped” he said closing his eyes in pain.

“You think I will let you leave this place like you did before? no way, you are staying here, in fact let me get the doctor to come sedate you” he said standing up.

“Gabriel wait, I need to tell you who the boss is, please wait” he said painfully. “The boss is…

“James my boy, you are awake” someone interrupted from the doorway.

“welcome Sir, please have a seat” Gabriel greeted the D.P.O.

“How is he doing”?

” He is doing okay sir, but he is stubborn, he wants to leave the hospital bed like he did before, I was on my way going to get the doctor before you came in sir, he needs to be sedated” he completed still eyeing James.

“Am sorry son, I was late when you needed me, when I got there with my men you had already left, Gabriel please go and get the doctor” he said waving him away.

“Okay sir, I will be right back” he said walking towards the door.

“Gabriel” James called looking scared. “please don’t leave me here” he completed looking so pale suddenly.

Gabriel turned and saw the look of horror and fear in his eyes and wondered what happened, he needed to call the doctor so that he can sedate James, he needed to rest. “I will be right back James” he said walking out of the room.

“Well well son, it is just the two of us now, I can easily finish you off and get this whole drama over with, don’t worry son, I promise to give you a slow death” he grinned wickedly bringing out a syringe from his pocket.

“Gabriel” James muttered, he couldn’t shout, his voice failed him. “Gabriel” he muttered again, louder this time with tears already dropping from his eyes, he was going to die after all, he closed his eyes and waited for death.
