A BITTER-SWEET NIGHTMARE

Episode 9

Dreams vs Reality.

THIS LED THE two of them to withdraw from their respective lines because the shock that was hitting was attracting attention.

“Are you sure that’s your ex?” Markus asked.
“What do you mean am I sure? How can I forget my ex-girlfriend of all people?” Max posed a question.

Markus was lost, as he stood there begging his mind to comprehend the weight of the matter, Max pulled out his phone and began looking for evidence. In a flash, he showed Markus not one but a handful of photos to prove that indeed he wasn’t crazy.

“So… What are you going to do?” Markus asked him.

After all, unlike Max, Markus knew very well the effect that she had on him and vice versa.

“I don’t know, I can’t let her see me. She thinks am on a bus from Kitwe right now.” Max said.
“Wait… What did you just say?”
“You heard me. I lied to Janine that I was still in Kitwe and started off later on in the day.” Max explained.
“But why would you do that? You’ve been here since morning.” Markus was astonished and a little confused as he tried to fit in Max’s shoes.
“Bro… That doesn’t matter right now. What should I do?” He asked.

Because of how awkward the whole thing was between the two… From where Janine stood, whatever she was doing (She already had the bottle of Vatra in her hand) she noticed the unsettling tension of Markus and also that he was no longer on the line to the counter anymore.

She got her phone and checked for any messages but there was non. Max hadn’t texted yet to alert her of his whereabouts.

Janine “@” Hey. What’s happening, where have you reached? “@”
.
.
.
“So, what do you plan on doing?” Markus asked. The only thing that was on his mind was, ‘So, this is the dude from Ndola…’
“She’s sent a message!” He exclaimed.

The weird part was that he was tense and losing his mind. Well, under normal circumstances he was supposed to be pissed and throwing a tantrum… That would have made much sense.

“While she’s heading here. But why are you scared, if anything ain’t you supposed to confront her?” Markus asked.
“You not helping.”
“Well, then you can just go and hide, wait for us to go out and then you continue with your plan or you can just confront her,” Markus told him.
“What happened between you two?” Max asked in a whisper.
“I don’t kiss and tell. Sorry.”
“Kiss and tell, that’s BS. Did you hit the target?” Max asked.
“What? Come on bro… You can’t be asking me such, even if I did it’s not like I can tell you. I’ve only known you for less than a day.” Markus pointed out.

Destiny or Fate, one of them did strick that’s for sure. Because while the two were busy arguing in whispers Janine arrived at where they stood.

“Hey, Mark-u-s. Max!” She exclaimed.
“You two know each other? What the hell!” She shouted.
“Actually, I’ve just known recently that he’s Max.” Markus clarified.
“What the hell. Did you play me? No wonder you were so keen about us going to Shoprite.” Janine said as she went ballistic.
“Hold it right there. Thought you said your brother was visiting. Is this him?” Max asked her. He was now on the blink of just going crazy.
“Brother! Hell no!” Markus stepped away from Janine so that he could face her. “Is that what you told him? Damn Janine, I thought you were done playing games.” He added. Markus spoke from a point of one who knew most of her adventures when it came to relationships.
“What are you getting mad for? Am the one who needs to get mad.” Max butted in.
“Can both of you keep it down? You making a scene.”
“Keep it down!” Both the guys exclaimed in unison.
“And you, what are you doing here? Ain’t you supposed to be on the bus?” Janine asked Max.
“We-l-l, well, I thought I get you a little something,” Max said nervously as he held the bottle of yoghurt up high for her to see.
“Banana.” Markus laughed.
“What’s so funny?” Max asked curiously.
“If that was truly for her then you would have known that Janine doesn’t take drinking yoghurt and even if she did, am very much positive banana flavour wouldn’t be it,” Markus said as he began to laugh.
“Damn!” That was all Janine could say as she walked out.

The two were left star-struck not knowing what to do, or better, whom between the two was going to go after her.

“You were supposed to be on my side,” Max said as the both of them went after her.
“Your side? Since when was I even with you? Why didn’t you mention your ex’s name during our conversation in the morning?”
“Who does that? You a stranger, I can’t be giving you names. What if you look her up on Facebook, huh?” Max was making the whole thing look dramatic and weird.
“I trusted you, I even told you I loved her,” Markus added to the gist.
“How was I to know we were talking about the same girl?” Max responded sharply.
