NOT ANOTHER LOVE STORY

Episode – 35

#MWAPE

I waited for Lucas and Allan’s mother to arrive. The more time I spent there, the more I began to think about what Ivy had written in her texts.
My presence wasn’t going to solve anything, rather, it was just going to escalate things once his father arrived.
The only option I had was to leave the Police station, besides, I was already being ignored by the Police.

“Hey, Limpo…”
“Mwape! What time is it?” She asked me.
“It’s late. I need you to help me out.”
“This is past midnight, what kind of help do you need that can’t wait until tomorrow morning?” Limpo asked me.
“Well, am at the Police station. Can your brother pick me up? Please love… I will explain.” I begged her.
“It’s Friday. My brother isn’t home. I think he has a gig at Evelyn Hone College. Let me check with him… I will text you.” She told me.

Within a yawns time, I received a text message that confirmed the location of Limpo’s brother. I got up and began to walk around like I was checking for something till I was outside, a minute later I had left the police station and was heading to the College.

“Why is my son locked up?” My mother’s voice echoed in the hallway. She came through with tears streaming down her face.
“Madam you can’t go there…” The poor officer called out as he followed her behind.

When mum saw me, she turned to Lucas and shook him like a paper and repeatedly asked him ‘What is this…’ while pointing at me in the cell.

Mum and Lucas arrived earlier than dad. I noticed that Mwape wasn’t with them but decided not to ask.

“Mum, please _ get me out of here…”
“I wish I could but I can’t. Your father has ordered them not to release you unless it’s him who says otherwise,” Mum answered.
“What were you thinking? Why didn’t you tell me you wanted to run away?” Mum asked.

Despite putting me in a difficult position with her advice, she wasn’t upset that I had gone against it. However, she was worried because dad was involved. Later on, I learnt that Dad would be coming in the morning.

“You could have just ended the whole thing under a mutual understanding with Ivy,” Mum said. Lucas was like a baby who had no idea what was going on. I promised him that if things went the other way, I wasn’t supposed to involve him.
“End what? This relationship that dad cooked up has no exit. I can’t choose anything because of this stupid inheritance. I don’t want it.” I exclaimed. My voice was getting horsy.

“Where the heck are you? When we arrived you were nowhere to be seen…” Lucas said.
“Am sorry Lucas. I love your friend, I really do… But this is bigger than me. I don’t think I can be there for him.” I told him.
“You giving up on him just like that?”
“Just like that? His father made the world stand still just to get to him. I have nothing, what do you think will happen to me when he decides to look my way?” I asked him.
“Lucas, I don’t know what will happen to your friend, the news of his running away is already in every newspaper and this is just 6 AM. The whole thing happened at midnight for Christ sake.” I cried.
“He will be out.” He said, “The mother called his dad and she is relentlessly pleading with him to just let him off.” Lucas added.
“Let him marry her. What’s the worst that can happen?” I said.
“Are you insane!” Lucas yelled.
“I can’t watch him suffer like that, the thought of knowing I can’t do anything to change all this is hurting. Let him marry her, I won’t hold it against him.” I told him.
“Are you thinking straight?” He asked me.
“Am thinking straight, he is in there because he refused to marry Ivy. If he agrees to marry her am certain that his father’s anger won’t be there anymore.” I tried explaining to him.

I maintained my stance and didn’t tell Lucas where I was. Not only that, I was yet to explain to Limpo what I was doing at the Police Station in the middle of the night.

“Have you seen Mwape?” I asked Lucas.
“Not at all. When we got here last night she was nowhere to be seen.” He told me.
“She ran away…” I laughed.

I couldn’t blame her, furthermore, she did the right thing. Dad wouldn’t have taken it easily if at all she was around once he arrived.

“You weren’t like this yesterday, did they hit you?” Lucas asked.
“It’s nothing _ am okay. Don’t let mum in, I don’t want her to see me like this.” I told him.
“I can’t make any promises but I will try.” He comforted me.

I could see how nervous Lucas was, mum wasn’t an exception. She knew how stubborn her husband was.

“You people won’t keep me here. I want to see my son!” Mum’s voice echoed from the reception room.
“Please ma’am, you are making my job difficult. I’ve been given orders that no one should be allowed to visit him.” The young police officer tried to explain. Mum didn’t seem to care and Lucas was more of a liability when it came to preventing her from coming to see me.
“Okay…” The officer said they were in the hallway approaching my cell.
“I will give you 5 minutes.” The officer said.

“Allan, Just marry her,” Mum begged me.
“I can’t do that…” I objected.
“Your father will not change his mind. You know how he is, if it means him funding a reason to keep you locked up _ he will do it. Ivy is your only ticket to leave this God-forsaken place.” She sobbed.
“Mum, can I have a word with Lucas?” I asked her.
“Don’t cry, it’s going to be okay…” Lucas told her.
“There is something you not telling me. Where is Mwape?”
“I don’t know where she is. I do know that she won’t be coming back here. Yes, I spoke to her earlier and she begged me to convince you to get married. I failed to tell you that when I came earlier…” Lucas pointed out.
“So, that’s how it’s going to be…” I sighed.

My brain wasn’t helping, the only thing I could think about to numb the pain was to think of a ridiculous child song… Twinkle twinkle little star…

“Tell mum that she can call Dad. If a wedding is what it will take for me to be free, I will do it.” I said.
