Until death – chapter 7

Chapter 7

Theme:- [ The will to survive]

The remaining soldiers, perhaps 25 in number, stood in front of I and Kira. Their eyes streaked red with fury. I know Ryan intentionally set us up, I know he did it so I couldn’t survive. I know the first announcement he made that we should fight each other until death, while the last 5 men standing were the winner is just mythical news so people wouldn’t suspect his objective. All the soldiers, who had a black hood covering their face let out a great battle cry and attacked us. I didn’t waste another second as a charge to meet them. I evaded the first man attack, punctured him in the right eye, and blood gushed out of his orifices. I felt an arrow whoosh past my face and Lodge on the fore-head of another man. Another attack was made at me, but I jumped high, swivelled mid-air and performed a screwdriver’s skills by twisting my body twice mid-air. I deflect the law of gravity, with my head coming down first, followed by my knife which was sharp as a metal spike. They caught my aggressor on the neck and sliced his throat. I did a double backflip stunt and kicked the man at my back on the neck. Two men attacked me at once, but I circumvented their attack, grabbed their arm and twisted it. I am sure they were wondering how a skinny boy like me can be so strong like that, little did they know that my mom has been breeding me for war since when I was 10. The man screamed in agony as the bone in their arm joints dislocated. I released their hands and hit their heads together. All around us, the populace was cheering, wailing so loud that I am sure their voices would fill the whole area. I took a glance at Kira, and I was awed by her malevolent skills. She was using an arrow and a knife at the same time. Truth to be told, she was a wrecking machine. I watched as she blocked one soldier who attacked her, stabbed the man in the neck with her arrow and the other end of the arrow appeared on the man’s neck. She bent low to avoid another attack, then she whacked the man on the manhood. She twirled her body and initiated a kick at the man’s face. She glanced at me and her lips curled into a smile. I felt my heart swelled in happiness, and all I wanted to do then was to be with her. I suddenly felt something hard-hitting my neck. Slowly, I turned back to see a soldier holding a plank in his hand. I felt liquid dripping down from the spot where the man hit me, using my hand to touch it, it was blood. The man slammed the wood on my face again, and I stumbled down on the arena’s ground. I could hear Kira screaming in anxiety, I could hear her urging me to stand up, I could her saying I would be her slave and performed all her errands for the next 7 days. I wished I could stand up, and fight back. But I couldn’t. My vision became blurred while blood was dripping down on my face. I could hear Ryan’s voice in my head, mocking me and telling me to use the remaining life I have. I imagined the evil smile and wide grin on his lips. “Noo.” I heard Kira’s voice, followed by a loud rustling of footsteps. “Rey Reed,” I heard her shouting my name. But it was standing from a distance in my ear. “You have to stand up now, or else he will ki*ll you.” I heard Kira’s voice, but I couldn’t move my hand. Perhaps, it is the best time to meet the angel once again. Who knows maybe they will accept my soul this time. “Rey Reed.” I heard Kira’s voice again, and the next thing I felt hitting my body was a sharp metal. I could feel metal that looked like a stake entering my stomach, and it was pushed down until it came out from the other end. Slowly, I open my eyes in an attempt to see Kira’s face for the last time, knowing fully well that I wouldn’t have the opportunity to escape death this time. I let out a small smile as I saw her fighting viciously, and trying to keep the soldiers from hitting my body anymore. She unsheathed three arrows, placed them on her bow and released them at once. She used her bow to parry a smash before she jabbed the soldier in the chest. She slides on the floor and performs a backflip using the opportunity to release another arrow. I admire her fighting skills because she did more destruction than I could ever imagine. Finally, I felt my strength leaving me, and I could hear the death angel telling me my time was over. Eventually, I closed my eyes and allowed darkness to take over.

Deliberately, I opened my eyes to find myself in a chamber. I was wandering around the chamber with no way out. The chamber was painted in plain white paint, making it look like the matrix’s training grounds. The floor was made of shining material, which I guessed to be marble. There was nothing present in the room except for the door and a single chair. I moved to the door again and tried opening it but it all ended in vain. I cried out in frustration, grabbed the doorknob and twisted it harder, but it wouldn’t budge. I was about to give up when I felt a presence behind me. I turned my head back, only to meet the shock of my life. Sitting on the chair where I was just standing was no other person than my dad. He was clothed in a white gown with his legs crossed on each other. I looked closely and discovered his face held a fury and disappointed expression. I bend my head in shame, as a guilty pang hits me hard on the chest. “You flunked me, Rey Reed,” my father chastised me with a harsh tone. “You have let your emotions cloud your sense of thinking. You are making the same mistake I made.” I have never seen my dad so furious like this before. Even though I was only 5 when he died in a plane crash, he had never been mad at me like this.

“I was warned by my friends and family when I wanted to marry your mother, but I was oblivious while my emotions took the best part in me.” I raised my head sharply as he mentioned that marrying my mom is a blunder. Several thoughts started running across my mind. Could it be that Ryan was right when he called my mom a b***h? Why would my daddy be blaming himself for marrying my mom? I have never heard or seen both of them quarrel before. Even when I grew old, she never spoke ill of my dad.

“She was a liar, deceitful deity and a lush serpent under the green grass.” My father said, jolting me out of my thoughts. I wished to ask him many questions, but my tongue is glued to the ground, I can’t find my speech box, and my brain isn’t even processing anything. It was like the idiot left me alone to solve my problem. “What did you mean dad?” I finally managed to ask.

“Listen to me, Rey Reed.” My dad said with a firm tone. A tone which he always used whenever he wanted someone to do his will by fire by force. “Rey Reed, Kate isn’t your mom, my dad said and I felt my head ringing loudly. It was like a sledgehammer hit my head. Tears poured out of my eyes, and my body started shaking vigorously. “Listen to me, Rey Reed.” My dad said in a firm tone again. “My time is running out, likewise that of your friend that is out there in the arena ground. You will survive, but that depends on your will. You must also escape from this hell, no matter how many years or what it takes you.” My father authorized it. Slowly, he raised from the chair and moved closer to me. He clasped his hand on my shoulder, and I could feel his strong muscles squeezing my shoulders tightly which makes me wonder why my mom said he was weak. “That is not the kind of weakness she is talking about.” My father said as if reading my thoughts. “What she means is that my love for her makes me weak, and she was indeed right.” He clarified. He clasped his other hand on my shoulder, squeezing it harder which left me no choice but to whine in pain. “Rey Reed, you are a different species, a different being with a special ability. Have you ever wondered how you were able to survive 4 years in the arena ground? Have you ever wondered why those people fear you? Have you ever wondered how you always manage to cheat death?” My dad inquired, his face was now softening. I ransacked my brain, trying to find a good answer to all his questions, but my brain isn’t present in my head again. “That is because you are special.” My dad said, answering the question himself. “You have to get out of that hell,” he said, pointing towards the exit direction as if he was pointing to the arena exit, and I could feel his anger towards Ryan. “Rey Reed, you must get out and discover who you are. You must discover your background, and don’t trust anybody. Finally, don’t let your emotions cloud your point of view. Love is a sin, Rey Reed. And that day you fall in love unless you complete your quest, then you have surely signed your death warranty. Go out there Rey Reed, and complete what you started. It is now your choice to choose, whether you want to live or stay here in this stricken room forever.” My dad concluded, and he vanished out of sight, it was like he was never there before. Then I felt my brain coming back to its rightful position, I felt my tongue untie itself while my speech box was now working perfectly. I knew my dad just told me a deep secret and put me on the right path so I wouldn’t end up like him. But the question now is how do I get out of here, or where to begin my search? Many thoughts were running in my mind without any perfect answer. My mind drifted to the words, emotion. I have started to develop feelings for Kira, and I don’t want to hurt her feelings. I was now stuck in two different worlds, and I knew I must decide on a time. Will I forget my feelings for Kira and face my quest and how to escape here? Or I should choose her, then I should be ready to face the consequences. I took another glance at the door, without being told, I knew it was my way out. I reached for the doorknob twisted it but It won’t budge. I tried several times, but it all ended in vain. Sweat was now dripping from my forehead and I was beginning to lose my patience. I knew every minute I wasted here was putting my body and Kira in danger. The thought of Kira sparked something in my head. My dad said the only reason to survive is my will. Perhaps, my will isn’t strong enough to open this door. Then I relax my mind and let it automatically flashback to everything I have ever seen or heard. I think of my quest, my mother, even though my dad said she is a betrayal. Then finally, I think of how happy I will be with Kira and all the people I had to save out there. I channel everything together and send it towards the door like a key. I insert them into the keyhole and imagine them twisting the door and opening it. Just like I had imagined, the door made a creaking sound and opened on its own. a bright light illuminated out of the door and consumed me. I felt it lifting me and taking me through a step. After seemed like-like forever, I finally saw an opening that looks like a tunnel exists. Without hesitation, I grabbed the perimeter and dragged my body out. The next thing that follows is the loud roaring of the crowds. I blinked my eyes twice before opening them. At first, it was blurred. But after a few minutes, they adjusted to the light. I was about to stand up when my eyes met a deadly scene.

Kira was on the floor, blood covering her whole body and she looks like someone who has been through the worst. The lifeless body of soldiers surrounded her, and I could see how she slaughtered them brutally. “ki*ll her, ki*ll her, ki*ll her.” I heard the crowds chanting loudly. Their voices were so high that they nearly damaged my eardrum. I look around, wondering who they were referring to. That is when my eyes meet with that of a man. No, he looks more like a beast than a man. He had scars running across his face, and he was huge like a chimera. He had a spear in his hand which I am sure he was about to use to finish Kira. I could see Kira crawling back, but she was so wounded that I am sure she wouldn’t survive a hit from the beast. Anger spurted through my veins, I felt my eyes turning deep black and my body was reacting involuntarily. Just when the man was about to stab Kira, I jumped on my feet and flung myself towards them with one aim in my heart. To defend Kira and fight the beast UNTIL DEATH.
