Chapter 45

Andy

Just as I feared. Mom knows Ugwa’s father. When she was describing someone that she claimed Anibe looked like yesterday, I suspected it to be her father.

But I just hope it’s not what I’m thinking. I hope she just knows him from somewhere else.

There’s this nightmare I’ve been having. Even while I was unconscious it kept playing in my head.
That Daniel hit me with his car and another scene, he shot me dead. I don’t know why I feel like something is just not right.
With everything that’s going on, I feel insecure. I know I’m supposed to be mature and not freak out but I’ve got this problem with my mental health. I get panic attacks a lot. That’s most of the reason I don’t like getting into trouble with anyone. I don’t talk too much and I don’t fight because my heart can’t take the tension. I’ll just get a seizure and that might lead to other complications.
Only my mom knows about this. No one else but her. I’ve been like this for half my life

Ugwa and I are now outside the ward. We came with policemen and some other security personnel are situated around.

We were sitting on a bench and our hands were intertwined, as usual

Ugwa: what nightmares were you having?
Me: I… I rather not talk about it

I don’t want her to have anything against Daniel. He would just see me as a cause for another problem of his

Ugwa: I’m just so scared. About my brother. He’s too young for what they’re making him go through

I squeezed her hand
Me: I’m sure they won’t hurt him. He’ll be back

Ugwa : I’m the reason for all of this. Its all my fault
Me: don’t say that

Ugwa: do you know it’s…
She paused as she looked down the hallway

Me: what’s wrong?
I looked down the hallway too and saw Daniel standing and staring at us like he was going to skin us alive.
Ah Daniel, always angry. Sometimes I wonder why he’s always bitter. I’m still trying to figure that out. There must be a reason

His eyes moved to our hands then he looked at me. Ugwa stood up, letting go of my hand

Ugwa: Daniel
He stared at her and heaved a short sigh then walked to her

Daniel: Unugwa
Ugwa: what are you doing here? You have to go. You can’t let them see you

She began to push him away
Daniel: just let me talk to you
Ugwa: there’s nothing to talk about. Just go

He looked at me with eyes that could ki*ll

Me: I’ll just excuse you both
I stood up and leaped out past him. My leg had an issue but the tight plaster on it makes me move with less pain. I’m supposed to carry crutches but it makes my underarm sore, I don’t want to carry it

As I walked out I decided to go and sit on a bench instead of going outside.

Unugwa

Me: Daniel you just have to go! I don’t want you here
Daniel: Unugwa you’re sending me away? What happened? What happened to you? We were supposed to be best friends

I huffed out air trying to control myself from yelling.
But seriously this guy shouldn’t be here. I can’t let anyone inside to know he is here

Me: please do me a favor
Daniel: don’t tell me to leave you alone because I won’t

Oh great! I was about to tell him to leave me alone

Me: just go away from here and don’t come back. Just go
Daniel: okay I will, only if you promise to see me later. We have a lot to talk about

I sighed in desperation and looked ahead but didn’t see Andy
Where did he go? It’s not safe. What if Daniel brought men?

Me: okay okay I’ll come and see you. Just go

Daniel: I’ll send you the venue
I nodded briskly and looked back at the door. I just hope no one comes out and see Daniel. Especially my dad

Me: bye
He looked me over and nodded then turned and began to go. I laid my hand on my chest and breathed in.
Now where is Andy?

I began to walk slowly down the hallway. I got to the other hallway and saw Daniel gripping unto Andy’s arm

Daniel: you think you’ve won right? You think you’re the lucky one?

Andy: Daniel, let go of my arm. Let go of my arm

Daniel: I’m going to teach you a real lesson. One that you’re going to regret

Andy: isn’t that the only thing you do? Making others feel pain because that’s the only thing you feel. Don’t you even get tired of disturbing me. I don’t fight back. Isn’t it boring for you to keep disturbing me?

Daniel laughed and released his grip on Andy in a rough way

Daniel: you and I both know you’re not who you show people you are. You’re dangerous, even more than I am. And I wonder why you’re hiding that devil in you

What is he saying? Andy is hiding his personality?

Andy: maybe I grew up. But you didn’t. You’re still that stupid and bitter kid who never grew up

Daniel: I don’t care about how you see me. But know this, I’ll take her away from you. And you will be too helpless to fight back

Andy : if it’s Ugwa you’re talking about… Then you’re wrong. I love her and I’ll not let anyone not even you, take her away from me. Don’t let me go back to the old me

Daniel clenched his fist and before he could make a move I jumped out and pushed him away

Me: enough! Both of you!
I looked at the both of them and huffed angrily

Me: Daniel didn’t you say you were leaving?
He glared at Andy who seemed to be glaring back at him, then he just turned and left
I faced Andy and crossed my arms

Andy: are you okay?
Me: that’s a question for you to answer
I walked to the hallway where my mom’s room was and he followed me. He caught up with me and held my hand

Andy: I’m sorry. But what’s wrong?
Me: what was Daniel talking about? About you hiding your personality?

He sighed and rubbed his forehead. And he didn’t answer

Me: Andrew…
He looked at me
Andy: forget about that
He waved his hand and began to walk gently towards the bench we once sat before Daniel came.
Is Andy hiding something?

He sat down and sighed deeply then closed his eyes.
I walked to him and sat down

Me: you’re not telling me something Andy. You’re hiding something

Andy : can we please change the topic?
His eyes were still closed. I nodded and stood up and walked to my mom’s ward.

Anibe: hey come here
I walked to him. Mrs Del Solo had left after talking with dad. They knew each other before and I just hope it’s not what I’m thinking.

Lewis and my dad had gone out to talk too and Anibe was keeping mom company even though she was still unconscious.

Me: what?
Anibe: I just tracked down Chubi, he’s somewhere around the police station

Me: the police station?
Anibe: yeah. Look
I looked into his iPad and saw a red light beeping over a building

Me: that’s him
Anibe: whosoever has him has connections with the police
He looked at me and I sighed and placed my hand on my forehead

Me: Daniel was just here
Anibe: Daniel?
Me: yeah. Said he wanted to see me
Anibe: and what did you say?
Me: I agreed for us to meet somewhere else just so he could leave here

My brother was quiet. He just looked at the screen of his iPad.
I wanted to tell him about what I heard Daniel saying to Andy and how Andy refused to talk about it but I kept it to myself.

Anibe: Unugwa, I feel we should leave this place
Me: leave? Why?
Anibe: look, I’ve done a little research on Mr Alberto. He’s like the president of this City. He owns the police and the other security personnel. It seems he’s into some sort of illegal business so he made sure he uses the police for himself

Me: but he’s not the only rich man in Cebu. What about Mr Del Solo?

Anibe: well, Andy’s dad might not be aware of all of this. He may and he may not have connections with the police. But the crooked one is Eden Alberto

Me: that’s not even where my problem lies. My problem is if Daniel is working with his father. I don’t know what to think. I’m scared

Anibe : that’s not where the problem lies. The problem is Chubi. If we can get him back, we’re leaving this country

Me: and we’ll leave the mess Eden Alberto is causing? What about Andy? He’s a victim too remember?

Anibe : they are sons of the soil. They can deal with their problems. We can’t no matter how hard we try. A dog shouldn’t bark at strangers in another person’s house.

Me: you’re right. This is their land, they’ve got power here. We don’t.

Anibe: I’m sure Andy’s dad can fight for his family. The best way we can fight for ours is protecting it from trouble. Has anyone of us ever been kidnapped or threatened or even shot at? But here it’s all happening. And we’re lost in the shadows because we don’t even know who’s on our side

Me: what’s dad’s take on all…

The door opened and Mrs Del Solo walked in so I had to stop.

Mrs Del Solo : hey, do you know where Andy is? I need to collect something from him

Me: yeah he was just seated at the hallway. Isn’t he there?

Mrs Del Solo : no. No one was sitting there

She opened the door and looked at the long bench. I walked to the door and looked out, he wasn’t there

Me: he might have gone to the rest room
Mrs Del Solo : oh okay. I’ll wait for him

I nodded and walked back to Anibe. He was standing beside the window this time. I went there and leaned on the window frame. I looked down and saw a black jeep Cherokee driving fast out of the hospital premises.

Me: what sort of reckless driving is that?
Anibe looked at it as it went into the street.
He shrugged and continued with his iPad
Anibe : that’s how terrorists drive

Me: terrorists?
He didn’t answer

Me: I hope it’s not what I’m thinking
He still didn’t answer

Me: Anibe!
He jerked and looked at me
Anibe: hey, why yelling?
Me: you said terrorists?
Anibe: yes

Me: I hope it’s not what I’m thinking
Anibe: what are you thinking?
Me: Andy….

Andy

I opened my eyes that felt really sore and heavy. I was in a dark room though not too dark, just that they was no source of direct light.
To my dismay, I found out I was tied up. My legs were tied and my hands too

I began to struggle to break free but whoever tied this must be a professional. The ropes are really big and strong like the ones used to tie sails to a ship

Then it dawned on me. I’ve been abducted. Whoever wanted to attack me at the hospital must have gotten me. But how?
I tried to remember and all I remembered was when I was sitting on that bench in the hallway. I didn’t see anybody but I do remember a sharp pain in my neck like I was stabbed with a syringe.

God please help me. I don’t want to panic or else my heart will seize.

I calmed down and breathed in. I’ll just wait and see what my fate is

After some minutes, I began to doze off. I slept for some time, not knowing how long though. I only woke up when I heard voices.
I saw three men standing in the room and the door was opened.

I looked up at them but didn’t say anything.
One of them made a phone call to someone that I’m awake and I waited to see what was going to happen.

Moments later, a short man wearing glasses walked in with one other tall guy. They were standing in front of the door and since the light from the door was directly at my face, I couldn’t see theirs. You know if it’s dark, and someone flashes a torch on your face, you won’t be able to see the person’s face.

Man: he looks so innocent. It’s almost hurting me that you’re here. Almost hurting me

That voice is so sly. I have heard that voice before

The second guy beside him spoke up
Guy: he’s not innocent even one bit. He’s just the misfortune. I’m glad he’s finally getting what he deserves

My heart sank.
Me: Daniel…

Daniel: don’t call my name you bas***d!

I huffed out hot air from my nostrils. So Daniel is behind all these.

Man: well, you boys should teach him a lesson for some time. Daniel meet me later, we have things to talk about

The man left and Daniel moved closer to me. He squatted and this time I could see his face clearly

Me: why are you doing this?
I was feeling bitter and my voice was beginning to crack.

He smirked and ruffled his hair slowly
Daniel : you know I’ve always hated you. Right from time. And you never liked me either. You took delight in taking what was mine. My friends, my personal belongings. You just loved to see me cry back then. Haha, we were so small, I couldn’t fight for myself. Then I got relieved when you relocated to the USA even though you had already made me lose my tooth. And then you decided to come back and stay here permanently, you thought I was going to be the same Daniel. But I had already changed. I wasn’t going to let you take what belonged to me anymore

He stood up and walked backwards a little then backed me with his hands in his pockets

Daniel: no matter how much I hated you, I wanted you to be alive to see me being better than you. To show you that you can’t take anything that’s mine anymore but instead I’ll take yours.

He faced me again

Daniel : But then you crossed the line and you stole Unugwa from me. You took my joy, Unugwa was my light and you found it nice to snatch her. And you thought I wasn’t gonna do anything, you thought I was gonna let you be? You thought I wouldn’t fight for her? No! I’m not a looser! I’ll make sure you suffer before you die so in your next life you won’t dare me!

Me: I love Unugwa
Daniel : and it’s me that doesn’t love her right? I’m the monster who’s not capable of love right?

Me: sure you love her. And I love her too but there’s a difference. She loves me and not you

And he punched my jaw. I groaned as the blow hit me and turned my head

Daniel : don’t you say she loves you. She doesn’t love you. And I’ll prove it to you. Maybe I’ll let you live for some time and I’ll keep giving you updates about her and how she now loves me.

Me: you’re bringing up a fight aren’t you?
Daniel : no I’m not bringing up a fight. This fight has been in existence. It’s just that this is the final round and you’re the helpless one here. This round declares me the winner and you the goddamned loser

He turned and left jamming the door behind him. I breathed in as I felt my heart beat increasing abnormally. Even if Daniel and his accomplices don’t ki*ll me, I might still die out of heart attack

The two guys began to move closer with tightened fists.
I looked up at the both of them randomly knowing fully well that I was going to be beaten till I black out
