CHAPTER FORTY

Joel sat beside Melody on the hospital bed while caressing her face, he had made it a routine to visit the hospital in the morning and later leave almost in the night. He kept on talking to her as though she was listening to him. He looked up at the screen of the monitor, her heartbeat hadn’t increased at all, he sighed.

“Bambi, when you finally leave this place, we will officially get married and i will buy you a car” he chuckled and blinked his eyes to stop the gathered tears from dropping. “How many children would you love us to have?, i want four, two beautiful daughters and two handsome boys that will take after me” he laughed out loud, wiped a tear and continued. “I can’t wait to finally be with you Bambi, you make my life complete” he stared down at Melody’s lifeless body, she was placed on oxygen, he kissed her forehead and just then, the detective came into the room.

He stared at Joel and shook his head in pity, the man had emaciated within a week. “Hey captain, how are you holding up?” he asked with a smile.

“Detective, am good, i was only having a discussion with Bambi” Joel replied taking Melody’s hand in his.

“Okay, that’s good” the detective replied with a shrug. Joel had almost fought him the other day when he told him that Melody wasn’t hearing the things he was saying to her.

“Any news?” Joel asked.

“Yea, remember, tomorrow is the hearing at the court, you need to be there on time” the detective replied.

“Oh, sure, i can’t wait to ki*ll that bas***d” he growled.

“No problem at all, you said you are making use of your family lawyer?” the detective asked again.

“Yea, my Dad insisted” Joel shrugged caressing Melody’s hand.

“Okay then, we will see each other tomorrow at the court” the detective replied and left. Joel stared at Melody and whispered “Bambi, just give me a few days and the head of that psycho will be rolling on the floor” he gritted his teeth.

Ambler walked into the cell but not without squeezing few naira notes into the hands of the prison warder that escorted him. Ezenwa almost screamed out in happiness when he saw him.

“Ambler, i thought you wouldn’t be coming anymore?” he asked with a wide smile.

“Why won’t i? i was just busy, that’s all” Ambler replied with a sigh, they had not still brought a chair at least into the cell.

“So, are you ready for tomorrow?” Ezenwa asked anxiously.

“Before i answer your question, are you sure there is nothing more left to lead the accusations to you?” he finally leaned on the wall.

“No, I killed the girl and my father, there is nothing else” Ezenwa shook his head sideways.

“You didn’t ki*ll the girl, nitwit, she is still unconscious and she can wake up any moment from now” Ambler hissed.

“I thought I killed her, but i stabbed her twice, which means she didn’t die? we need to finish her off then” he concluded with a sigh.

“Okay then, that aside, i want you to listen to me very carefully, once the judge asks you if you are guilty or not? just say you are not guilty, he will ask what you were doing at the farm house on the day the body of the lady was found, just tell them that you went to inspect the piece of land there because you wanted to continue from where your father stopped, that you were surprised to see soldiers there too and before you knew what was happening, they shot you on the leg, once you are done saying this, just leave the rest to me, did you understand?” he peered closely at Ezenwa.

“I understand very well, but wait a minute, my father didn’t will any of his properties to me, telling them i went to the farm house for inspection can be tagged as trespassing on another person’s property” Ezenwa said, confused.

“That is why i am your lawyer, fish brain, i have everything under control, i already crafted out a Will stating that the farm house and it’s environs are your inheritance. The only evidence that soldier man has is his girlfriend, they all could be lying against you for some reason best known to them, as long as your father and that girl are not available, we are good to go” Ambler replied stretching himself accompanying it with a yawn.

“What of Okenwa? he knows everything” Ezenwa asked again.

“Simple, he has always hated you for no reason and i can attest to that because i have been your family lawyer right from the start and moreover, you have an upper hand because Okenwa has a record with the Asylum, so his testament will be disregarded” Ambler replied him calmly.

“Wow” Ezenwa exclaimed.

“Yes, wow, just do as i said and you will be a free Man, but make sure you finish that girl off, she might wake up anytime soon, i can help you with that too.” Ambler replied ready to leave the cell.

“We sure will” Ezenwa replied with a grin.
