FOR MY COUNTRY ZAMBIA, HAPPY INDEPENDENCE

Freedom fighters of this country had a goal,
A vision that kept them going
that one day,
sons and daughters of their motherland,
shall walk down freedom street.

They were brave warriors
And had reached a decision
Zambia must be free

the powers of colonialism must be broken
and agaist such will
the chains of colonialism held them in vain.

Torture could not stop them

jail sentences could never hold them back

from behind prison cells they fought their way to freedom.
As blood dripped down their bruised bodies

they journeyed forward

looking upon that day of deliverance
when all shall walk down freedom street.

They did not count their lives dear

wanted their voices to be heard
by men who had waxed their ears

united they fought faithfully
until the powers of colonialism could hold them no longer
And the chains were broken

Freedom the purchase of blood
lives of good men wasted
so today wd can stand free
walking down freedom street
