I didn’t think through the plan. I knew it would work so I did it. The goal was to get his mind off questioning me even though it’ll be just for today. Tomorrow I can think of a way to evade his enquires. For now, I had to get out fast. Crying makes him want to provide comfort to me. I’m counting on his compassion, it’s the only card I have left to play.

“Why are you crying?”

He asks surprisingly rubbing my back. This is the dredged moment. I thought too fast about the plan I didn’t make a phase two. I’m a psychopath that cries for no reason. Or am I?

“I don’t know.”

I whisper between sobs. It’s official then. I’m a psychopath.

“You can’t just cry for no reason Elena. What’s wrong? Did I say something wrong?”

“Oh no, he’s going back to Van.”

I thought panicking.

“No, it’s not you. I was sad before I got in and I guess I just couldn’t hold it in anymore and I…”

I trailed off sobbing hard. At least I didn’t lie in that part of the sentence.

“I’m sorry, you shouldn’t see me like this.”

I placed my hand over my lips and focused on him.

“It’s okay.”

“It’s not. I shouldn’t be having outbursts like this. I’m so sorry.”

I apologized and sniffled.

“Do you need to take the day off?”

“No. I’m fine.”

I faced him sigh a full smile.

“I’ll see you tomorrow Sir.”

I went back to being formal. He suddenly took a few steps towards me gazing straight into my eyes.

“Two things.”

He says carefully tucking my hair behind my ears.

“One…”

His voice is barely audible.

“We’re not in the office. Don’t call me Sir or Mr O’Cornner.”

I gulp and slowly nod unable to look away myself.

“What’s the second?”

I ask feeling confident.

“Never again smear your face with tears. It conceales your beauty.”

I’m in awe at his words. He stares for a few more seconds before spuning around to leave. The door shuts tightly, I jump a little still frozen to the spot. His words are ringing in my ears.

I don’t know how or when but I feel my lips tug into a wide smile.
