Twelve Years Later

There’s nothing that dumb school bell could do. It couldn’t order her life, or list out duties and expect her to follow.

 

After all, she was Lian Salvatore.

 

Even the bell respected that name.

 

Walking in a stylishly sluggish manner, Lian hung her backpack casually across one shoulder and fixed her earpieces into her ear to listen to cool music.

 

The few students lining the school’s hallway turned to stare. They always did every time she walked past.

 

She had the coolest outfit. Coolest stuff.

 

And yeah, she was dubbed the Queen of the school, even though Salyn Constanza actually held that post

 

If not for the fact that her stupid twin brother was dating her currently, there would’ve been no limestone to their cat fights.

 

And talk about the devils.

 

In the empty twelfth grade classroom, Leon and Salyn were in a hot make out session.

 

Lian groaned inwardly and pounded on the door.

 

“Hey, you should always remember to keep the door closed when smooching.” she yelled.

 

“What’d you want, b***h?” Salyn spat out, with her arms wrapped around Leon’s neck.

 

Lian laughed, waiting for the drama to unfold.

 

“Did you just call my sister ‘b***h’?” Leon asked as he got up, making Salyn stumble and almost fall to the floor.

 

Lian almost choked from laughing.

 

“Uhm, Leon baby you see—”

 

“Leon baby?” Lian asked as she walked further in and placed her hand on her brother’s shoulder. “How dumb can that get?”

 

“My thoughts exactly sister. Can’t believe I’ve been putting up with that dumb nickname for two days!”

 

With a swagger, hands in hands, they walked towards the door.

 

“Leon baby, were meeting later, right?” Salyn called out hopefully.

She doesn’t know my brother.

 

He’s the biggest player in school.

 

“Err, no. We’re done b***h, get it? D.O.N.E!”

 

Leon and me highfived, and laughed as we exited the class, leaving a fuming, red faced Salyn.

 

“Seriously bro, you can’t tell me that you’re gonna finish high school without a steady girlfriend?” I asked as we walked to our cars.

 

We drive two separate cars.

 

“Okay, I won’t tell you.” he grinned at my frowning face. “I just wanna have fun with the ladies. And besides, just ’cause you’re dreamily waiting for Samuels to ask you out —”

 

“Shut up!” I cut him off with a mean look.

 

I always hate it when he teases me about Samuels.

 

I don’t know….. it’s obvious to everyone that I “like-like” Samuels, but it seems like it’s only him who doesn’t know.

 

And it also looks like daddy’s kinda involved.

 

When I complain to mom and he happens to be in the same room, he always had this super innocent look on his face.

 

Whatever.

 

“Leon, you damned well know that it’s against the rule for us to sneak out of school?” I asked as I ducked into my car.

 

“Who said we’re sneaking?” he asked back with a pointed look at all the teachers and students watching us from window and doors. “We’re Salvatores baby, there ain’t nothing anyone can do about it. Now let’s go have a huge piece of granny Prudence pies. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water!”

 

“Yeah, men!!”

I was on the phone with Betty Fankson.

 

So strange that I still have her number…. for the eighty seventh time, I’m telling myself that I’m gonna delete it soon.

 

As soon as the call was dropped, Samuels own came in.

 

“Hey man,”

 

” Hey Sam, what’s up?”

 

“Well, nothing new. You know, I’m actually getting tired of the harassment from Uncle — sorry, Emilio. Will he events let me date Lian?”

 

I laughed. “Keep it cool bro. Dad is just messing with ya. Just go to him, man to man, and iron this out. He likes that.”

 

“Whoa, as a matter of fact I will.”

 

“Yeah, good luck with that. Hope you don’t end up with a bullet through your head though!”

 

“What the f**k—”

 

“Just kidding!!!”

 

Hmm…I love my family.
