The next day Nonso registered a new line and called up Fummi with it.

 

Fummi heard the phone ringing but seeing it was a strange number ignored it.

 

“But your phone has been ringing, who is it? Jumoke asked.

 

“I don’t care to know just leave me alone, Fummi replied and the phone rang again.

 

Jumoke sighed and picked the call, “hello there good morning, She said.

 

“Good morning Jumoke, please can you give the phone to Fummi, Nonso said.

 

“What Nonso! Yes she’s here, Jumoke shouted and gave the phone to Fummi who couldn’t believe it.

 

“He.. He…. Nonso? Fummi asked.

 

“How are you dear? I’m so sorry for not hearing from you for days now, Nonso said.

 

“Tell me what happened? Have I wronged you in anyway? Fummi asked.

 

“No no you’ve never done anything wrong, but I’m so sorry, Nonso said.

 

“Is there any thing you feel I should know? Common you can talk to me no matter how ugly and painful it is I’ll bear it, Fummi said.

 

“Fummi please I want you to forgive me, I should have said this to you but I don’t think I can stand looking you in the eyes to say this. But I just hope you’ll forgive me, Nonso said.

 

“Nonso you can do better than this I beg you, please spill it out Nonso please, Fummi said in tears and Nonso sniffed.

 

“Fummi I’ll be getting married tomorrow you have the right to know about it, but trust me when I say I don’t want this either, Nonso said and Fummi closed her eyes tight nodding her head.

 

“Its fine, but I don’t know why it still hurts. I should be used to it by now, everything that is always dear to me is always taken away from me. Its fine Nonso and I wish you the best, Fummi said in tears.

 

“Fummi please I’m sorry, Nonso said with tears streaming down its face.

 

“Thanks so much for everything, I really appreciate it, Fummi said and dropped the call crying on Jumoke.

 

“I can’t believe this Fummi, someone tell me this is not happening, Jumoke said in shock not believing her ears.

 

“I was right, but I wish I could hold myself from loving him the way I did. Jumoke I’m broken, Fummi cried.

 

“Dear don’t say that, your man will come I’m sure of that, Jumoke said fighting back her tears.

 

“Then what kept him so long? Tell him to go to hell! Fummi shouted and ran away from Jumoke.

 

“Fummi where are you going to! Jumoke shouted scared…………….

 

Nonso sat covering his hand on his face shedding tears when Chioma walked in to his room, “what’s wrong again? Is it the headache? She asked bringing his hands down.

 

“I’m fine, Nonso said and left the room, got into his car and drove off…………

 

“Mom what’s wrong with Nonso? Why all this attitude everyday? Chioma asked Chinyere.

 

“Don’t mind that guy dear, when you two succeed in getting married I will take care of him and that girl, so don’t worry yourself, Chinyere said touching her.

 

“Mom I don’t like this, why does he treat me like this like i don’t worth him, it hurts mom, Chioma said.

 

“Dear I understand you don’t deserve this but I know Nonso is not in his right senses. Look at the girl you said he’s in love with which you know is not possible, don’t worry I will take care of him I promise you, Chinyere said.

 

“I just hope you do that quick, he keeps making me scared and confused every time and I am already tired, Chioma said with a frown.

 

“Honey don’t give up now, you’ve gone too far to accept defeat. You know very well we will never accept a stranger in this family so just calm down, Chinyere said touching her and Chioma nodded.

 

“I don’t want you to ruin this beautiful face of yours, now lets go for the shopping, you know tomorrow is your day, Chinyere said and Chioma smiled……….

 

“Are we seriously going there today? Festus asked.

 

“You heard me right, we are taking off this afternoon so we will be very present there tomorrow, Frank replied.

 

“Frank please don’t do this, I don’t want to see Nonso and my presence there will make Chioma uncomfortable, Festus said.

 

“Why will she be uncomfortable? Do you two have conscience? Wow thats interesting, Frank said.

 

“Frank I know I made a mistake but can we think well of how to settle this? Festus asked.

 

“A wicked man runs when no one pursues him. I am going with a clear mind and heart to see my friend, I don’t know about you. But you are coming with me and there’s nothing you can do about it. so I’ll advice you get your bag ready, we are leaving this afternoon and that is final! Frank sternly said and left the house………….

 

“Where’s Nonso there’s a lot for him to do but his number is switched off and he’s not at home, Uchenna said.

 

“He stormed out of the house this morning, looks like his madness has started by i pray he will cast it out from him tomorrow, Peter replied.

 

“What is left to be done? You can just cover it up for him. Just leave that boy, you should know how last borns behave, Okoye came in.

 

“He hasn’t arranged his clothes yet and…………. “Just choose whatever you like for him, let me see how he will long his mouth to argue I will know what to do to him. Don’t worry yourself biko, Okoye came in………………

 

Nonso was already drinking and slept off there. He heard voices and touchings on his body and he opened his eyes, “sir I think you should start going home, its afternoon already and gouge been sleeping for hours now, The waitress said.

 

“I’m sorry, what’s the cost of the drinks? He asked cleaning his eyes.

 

“3,200 sir, she replied and he nodded.

 

He checked his pocket and saw he didn’t carry any cash.

 

“Uhm please can i do transfer? I really don’t have cash on me now, he said but she gave a frown.

 

“The alert can be fake, she said.

 

“I’m no such person, if you will accept it I’ll send 5,000 to your account right away please, Nonso said switching on his phone.

 

“Okay but I hope the alert will be real, the waitress said………………

 

Nonso arrived home and passed everyone at home like a jet, “Nonso where are you coming back from, Chioma said approaching him.

 

“Please someone should tell this lady not to come near me, Nonso said.

 

“Or else what? You’ll beat her up huh? What has come over you Nonso! Uchenna angrily shouted.

 

“Please I have no such time for this, i need to shower, Nonso said and staggered to his room.

 

“Mom will i survive with him as my husband? Chioma asked facing them.

 

“Chioma please ignore him, I think this has gone past the ordinary. Just sit down, when he freshens up I will talk to him, Chinyere said holding her to a seat…….

 

Coming out from the bathroom after staying in there for minutes, Nonso phone began to ring.

 

“Hi bro, Nonso picked up.

 

“What’s up man, we are at the airport, Frank said.

 

“What airport now? I’m on my way! Nonso shouted and began dressing up..
