“So, what have you done so far?” doctor Akachukwu asked after wearing the operating outfit.

“We have given him general anathesia, we were just about to start before you came in” doctor Joe explained.

“Get me the oscillating saw” doctor Akachukwu said to no one in particular.

“Here it is doc” the first nurse said.

He cut the sternum partially, straight down the middle, but didn’t remove it. he then slowly spread apart the cut halves of the sternum with a retractor, which allowed the entire chest and heart to be open before them. He carefully removed the old heart placing it in a stainless tray beside him.

“Where is the new heart” he asked again.

doctor Joe carried the new heart in another stainless tray and passed it to him.

He carefully placed the new heart in the patient’s body, he picked up a surgical loupes and sewed the sutures.

“We used sutures made of polypropylene and plastic polymer, that is why am sewing it with this magnifying surgical loupes, so that i can see my stitching” doctor Akachukwu said when he noticed them stare at him in confusion.

“Okay” doctor Joe replied still confused.

“Get me the customized plates and screws, it is time to hold the breastbone and the ribs broken earlier during the cutting process” doctor Akachukwu replied after the last stitching.

“Oh yeah, nurse Abigail, get the customized plates and screws” doctor Joe said not removing his eyes from what the other doctor was doing.

On getting the items he asked for, he started putting the sternum back together, when he was done with it, he said.

“let me have the vicryl sutures for the sewing of the first two layers” he said as the nurse brought it for him.

He started sewing up the flesh carefully, it lasted for 5 minutes, he stopped, looked at the nurse and said again.

“Get me the monocryl sutures for sewing below the outside layer of the skin” he said.

“Yes doctor” the nurse replied bringing him the item.

He stitched the lower layer of the skin slowly and carefully, while doing this, he signaled to them to pack up the items as he was done.

“The vicryl and the monocryl sutures are absorbable and only used on soft tissue. Vicryl suturing typically holds strength for approximately two to three weeks and is fully absorbed within 60 days

while monocryl lasts longer and is absorbed within 90 days” he explained after he was done with the stitching.

“Yea, i know about that” doctor Joe replied with a smile.

“The surgery was successful” doctor Akachukwu announced with a smile removing the nose mask and the gloves leaving just the overall.

“Thank God, this is the second successful heart surgery we have had in this hospital” doctor Joe said with a smile.

“The patient should be taken back to the ward now, he will be awake in few hours time” doctor Akachukwu said removing the overall.

“We need to give the people outside the good news we have” doctor Joe said shaking hands with doctor Akachukwu.

“Nanya walked aimlessly around the veranda constantly checking the time, she let out a sigh wiping her tears, she had been crying since Louis went into the theatre.

“Calm down Nanya, he will be fine, worrying too much is not good for your baby” Leo said hugging her.

“Leo, it is already 4 hours since they took him there, are they not wasting so much time?, am worried” she sobbed.

“Didn’t you tell me just this morning that you already talked to the big man up in heaven?, leave everything to him, he will handle it” Leo said patting her back.

“I know i talked to the big man, but i can’t help but worry” she sniffed.

“you don’t have to worry, you prayed, i prayed, and Mrs Scarlett prayed too, the big man will surely answer us, he is not wicked, so let’s calm down and wait” Leo consoled.

“Okay,” she nodded breaking from the hug and just then, the two doctors walked down towards them.

Nanya rushed to them already asking questions, the two doctors waited for everyone to gather before sharing the news.

“Akachukwu, how is he?, was it successful?” Nanya asked.

“How is my son?” Mrs Scarlett asked.

“Calm down everyone, he is fine, the surgery was successful, he just needs time before he will wake up” doctor Akachukwu said with a smile.

“Thank you Jesus, thank you Lord, Dad was right, you can answer prayers, my Louis is fine, he is fine Leo” she smiled while crying at the same time.

“Can we see him now?” Mrs Scarlett asked wiping her tears.

“Give him some time, he is not yet awake” doctor Joe replied with a smile.

Louis woke up hours later, he looked around and saw three people in the room, he sneezed which got everyone running to his side.

“Babe?, you are awake, how are you feeling now?” Nanya said taking his hand.

“Am fine babe, i guess the surgery was successful?” he asked rather than said.

“Yes my son, it went well, you have been cured, you won’t die anymore” Mrs Scarlett smiled through tears.

“Louis my man, glad to have you back” Leo said putting his hands in his pocket.

“I knew you were going to miss me so much, and you would be crying everyday, i had to come back” Louis chuckled.

“You wish” Leo scoffed looking away.

“You never told me you had a girlfriend son, and from what i have seen so far, i think she is expecting” mrs Scarlett said switching gaze from Louis to Nanya.

“Yea mom, am sorry about that, it just happened all of a sudden, but what do you mean by she is expecting?” Louis asked greasing his eyes in confusion.

“I mean she is pregnant” she said.

“Is it that obvious?” Louis asked with a chuckle.

“Am a mother Louis, i can detect when someone is pregnant or not, hers is even so glaring” Mrs Scarlett explained further.

“Mom, dad told me something two days ago, but that is something we will talk about later, when i get the strength for it” Louis said waving his hand in the air.

“Okay son, but wait a minute, i haven’t seen Chiboy since today, is he not aware of the surgery that happened today?” my Scarlett asked suddenly.

“Chiboy?” Leo asked looking at Louis.

“Yes, i mean Charles, why hasn’t he come since today?” she asked further.

“Wait mom, you just called him Chiboy” Louis said.

“Yes, that’s his pet name, it was given to him by his father, you mean you don’t know?”

“Louis?, are you thinking what am thinking?” Leo asked.

“Yes bro, i hate to admit it but am thinking in that direction too” Louis completed.

Just then, Charles entered the ward with fruits packaged in a shopping nylon, he greeted everyone and nervously moved towards the cupboard to drop the nylon.

“St Louis, how are you feeling now?, i just heard from a nurse that you had a transplant today, nobody even informed me about it” he shrugged.

“Well that’s because you are evil” Nanya hissed eyeing Charles.

“Excuse me?, what did you say?” Charles asked angrily.

“You have been excused already, and please stop adding “St” to my man’s name, he doesn’t own a sugar factory” Nanya hissed loudly.

“Babe, calm down, that is just a nick and nothing else” Louis said trying to sit up, his mother ran towards him and helped him, he rested his back on the bed board.

“I guess i should leave, it is obvious that she doesn’t want me here” he sneered walking away.

Once he got outside, he placed a call to someone, the person picked at the second ring and Charles said

“Hello Mom, can you imagine?, Louis got a new heart today and i didn’t even know about it, i don’t know how he got a donor actually, he is alive” Charles scoffed breathing hard for talking at a time.

“Thank you for giving us a strong evidence” Leo said standing behind.

“Now what the hell are you talking about?” Charles asked hanging up.

“So you have been a bad egg all these years?, i thought you love Louis like a brother?” Mrs Scarlett asked

“I still don’t know what you are talking about” Charles feigned innocence.

“Don’t give me that crap because Leo already recorded everything, so better start talking now” she said as Leo raised the cam recorder up for him to see.

“You want to know why?, you killed my father, you and your husband, you expect me to be happy? huh?” Charles yelled.

“What?, but we begged for forgiveness, your mom said she had forgiven us, you said the same thing too” Mrs Scarlett sobbed.

“Oh yeah, you think sorry is the end of everything?, just like the way i would have said sorry to you if Louis had died” he scoffed.

“it wasn’t our fault that your father died, and you know it” she sniffed.

“Just shut the Bleep up, you know what?, am leaving here this minute” he said turning to Walk away when Leo grabbed him by the hand.

“Am sorry man, but you go no where”

Charles gave him a punch on the mouth, dashing off Immediately, he ran after him telling Mrs Scarlett to contact the police. Charles ran towards the gate, pushed the gate man and opened the gate, he left the hospital premises and made to cross to the other side of the road, Leo dashed out Immediately, he looked up and saw it coming on a high speed,

“Charles, watch out” he shouted, but it was too late as the trailer already hit Charles, sending him high in the air, he fell down with a loud thud and the driver ran away leaving his car.

“Charles, man, i warned you, i told you to look out, but you didn’t listen to me” Leo sniffed placing Charles’ head on his lap.

“Am sorry man, my mom made me do it, tell Louis that am sorry and that i love him, my mom’s contact is in my phone, she was the last person i called and she is in Benin city not abroad as you people think, forgive me, I guess my end has come” he whimpered.

“Stop talking rubbish, am taking you back to the hospital for treatment” he said but felt Charles’body go cold. he sobbed standing up weakly.
