The Quenched Desire – Episode 3

When he got to the supervisor, he was handed a letter. “Oh, thank God! At last my promotion has come. I could get enough money for my family and to purchase more instruments. ” Charles said as he excitedly opened the letter to read the content.

He was greatly perplexed when he finally read the content of the letter. “What!! What did I do? How can you fire me? I have worked with all my heart on this job,” Charles asked the supervisor with anxiousness and hurt in his voice. “Charles, it isn’t my fault. The company suffered a huge loss and therefore decided to lay off workers. As it stands, all the workers who are single had been laid off, and that includes you. I am very sorry,” The supervisor elucidated.

Charles went home greatly disappointed. “What am I going to say to my parents? That I got fired!!! No way!! How would I be able to support my family?” these were the thoughts running through the mind of Charles as he approached home.

As usual, the atmosphere in the house was calm. To break the news of being sacked from work would throw the house into confusion. But, there was no way he could hide the news from his parents. “Charles, you are home early today. What happened?” Mrs. Roberts asked when she saw Charles enter through the back door. “And why didn’t you use the front door instead?” she asked again. Charles didn’t know which of the questions to answer.

“Mom, I have been fired from work. The supervisor called me and handed me my termination letter. He explained the company had suffered from a huge loss and the only solution was to lay off workers. The management laid off all the workers who were single,” Charles explained. “Why would they do that? Doesn’t the supervisor know you support this family? Why should he do that?” Mrs. Roberts replied as she sat in the chair behind her in exasperation. Why should this be happening to her family? It was her husband, and now it is her son. “Don’t worry mom, I will find another work by the grace of God. The God who gave me that work knows better. He will make a way for me.” Charles said while he moved closer to his mom to console her.

As usual, Charles left to his room to pray. “This situation calls for the hand of God,” he said as he shut the door behind him. He read the scriptures for hours and then prayed. He prayed continuously for two hours pouring out his heart to God. After praying, he went to take his shower, ate and left for church.

Charles got to the church still believing God will make a way for him. He knew within his heart God wouldn’t allow him and his family to go hungry.

Before the service was about to end, the secretary of the church came with an announcement of a job vacancy. The job required no special qualifications to apply for. Charles’ prayer was answered. The only problem with the opportunity was that, it was far from home. He contemplated for a while and later decided to apply. “I don’t really have a choice here. I need to get this job to support my family,” Charles said finally when he went on with the application.

After two days, Charles received a response from the company that he was hired. He quickly told his parents about the job and his intentions of leaving the house for another town. They didn’t have any option than to agree. Charles left home to the other town not realizing the spiritual preparation he had gained.

Charles lived around people who didn’t understand the power of prayer. Most attended church as a moral commitment, instead of a spiritual one. But, not Charles. Because of his unique desire for the Lord, Charles gave himself to fervent prayer and intercession.

Charles spent three years working outside his home. At age twenty, he prayed so much that he was known by some as a “mystical lunatic.” People could see him standing beside the road in a trance uttering deep sighs as his lips moved without the sound of words. He was giving so much attention to the Word of God that he often missed important things such as his meals.

Charles grew with commitment to God. He had no friends, and prayed earnestly to God to send him a true friend who will understand his passions and dreams. A friend who understood God the way he did. It seemed Charles always had answers to his prayers. He went to church that evening. It was a midweek service and few people were present. It was a usual thing as many of the church members mostly came on Sundays. Sundays attendance was much not because the people were seeking God, but to show off their material things. They often flaunt their earthly possessions such as cars, new shoes, new hair styles and new clothes. These things irked Charles as he didn’t see them as necessary.

He was always happy with the midweek services since more time was spent dissecting the word of God. He saw the Sunday service to be a ceremony where people came to compete and show off. He observed as people came to church, danced their heart out, shouted “Preach Pastor”, and yet left empty. The church was falling apart, and he felt the desire to allow himself to be used by God to bring a mighty revival in the church.

Since they were few that evening, there was more interactions. It was there Charles met his new friend Noah. Noah had the same passion for God as Charles did and because of that, bonding became easy. Soon, they shared their quiet time with each other after the service ended. They spoke about a lot of spiritual things and even the need for a revival in the church.

The new friends spent more time together. Sometimes, they stayed up half the night discussing and praying for God to bring revival in the church.

Charles’ behavior of standing trance-like beside the road speaking to himself became a worry to many ministers. They saw his behavior to be unusual. Charles and Noah were discussing and meditating on the Word of God when a rap sounded at the door. Noah stood up and ambled to the door since he was exhausted from the long hours of Bible study. Turning the key, he unlatched the door. To his amazement, it was Bishop Jake. “Am I dreaming? What would a man of this caliber be doing at my house?” Noah asked rhetorically in his mind. “Good morning Sir, please what can I do for you?” Noah asked with a lot of humility in his voice. “I am good son. I came to see your friend, Charles. Is he around?” Bishop Jake asked. “Yes Sir, you can come in. I will call him for you,” Noah said as he swung the door open to make way for Bishop Jake to enter the room.
