The Quenched Desire

Mr. and Mrs. Roberts were very excited at the birth of their son. They had been searching for a son for a long time and finally God had answered their prayers with a bouncing baby boy. “God, if you would grant me a male child, I would dedicate him to you,” prayed Mrs. Roberts as she cried in church imploring God for His intervention when she sought for a male child.

She had suffered from the hands of her in-laws for the past ten years because of her inability to bear a male child. Mrs. Roberts recollected when she almost lost her husband because of this issue. The family of her husband nearly brought in another woman as a second wife to bear male children. It was through the intervention of her parents that brought order into the chaos. She had cried days and nights to God, pleading with Him to end her woes. “Oh! At long last, my God has put smiles on my face. He has shamed my scorners and given me victory over my enemies. Come! All those who pointed fingers at me. Fingers of accusations, calling me a woman bereft of male seeds. Come! And see what my God has done!” Said Mrs. Roberts with tears of joy when she was asked by the pastor to bring the baby for blessing.

“What is the name of this adorable baby?” asked Pastor Charles. “Pastor, we have christened him Charles. My wife suggested we name him after you. So the name of the baby is Charles Roberts,” replied Mr. Roberts. “I am honored for you to name your child after me.” Said Pastor Charles. “Pastor, I want my child to be like you when he grows up. I want him to work for God. I promised God, I would train him in His statutes,” Mrs. Roberts said as she handed the baby over to Pastor Charles. Pastor Charles took the baby and blessed him. He prayed to God to let His will be done in the life of the baby he held in his hands.

True to their words, they brought up Charles in the way of the Lord. They bought him a brand new Bible at a tender age. The family was known for their love for God and hard work. At age eleven, Charles had read almost half of the Bible. Mr. Roberts and his wife made sure Charles had his quiet time every day, and slow but sure, Charles took a great interest in the things of God.

Mr. Roberts was working in a construction company. Although he didn’t have a high position in the company, he worked to the best of his abilities. His family depended on him, and there was no way he would let them down. He did extra work just to get an additional income to support his family. Because of his hard work, he was the favorite in the company.

Charles was enrolled in a Primary school at twelve. The passion to do the things of God was growing with intensity in his heart. He felt like preaching the love of Jesus to anyone who cared to listen. He shared the Word of God with his classmates on his first day at school. He wrote Bible scriptures on pieces of papers, stood in the doorway when it is break time, and shared them to his classmates. He often told them to memorize the scriptures. “I will ask you to quote it after classes,” Charles often added when he gave out his pieces of paper with Scripture inscriptions.

Soon, Charles turned his class into a church. The most troublesome students became calm as they all became serious with the Word of God. Gradually, Charles had won the whole class to Jesus. They always discussed the Bible and even extended the discussion to other classes.

News soon got to the Principal of what the newcomer was doing in his school. He was glad the little boy had brought so much change in his school. He had never encountered such a situation before in his school where a student would take up the work to change the negative characters of his mates. He was so overwhelmed he gave Charles the position as the worship leader in the school. Indeed, there was a massive revival in the school and the power of that revival extended to other schools.

Mr. Roberts was on his daily routine at work. He went to supervise a work that was done the previous day. This was a ten story building project. He was in charge of supervision that day since the supervisor wasn’t around. “Roberts, I will go to the capital city tomorrow and wouldn’t be at work. I have absolute trust in you and I have appointed you to supervise the work tomorrow. I know you wouldn’t let me down. I will see you when I come back.” The supervisor instructed the previous day while he took his bag and went to his car.

Mr. Roberts had been tasked with a great responsibility. He had never been trusted with such a responsibility before. The project involved huge sums of money and he was poised to do all he could to make it a success.

He came to work that day to check the strength of the materials used to complete the seventh floor the previous day. He went through all the floors inspecting the work that had been done. He finally moved to his target-the seventh floor.

When he got to the seventh floor, everything looked good. It seemed the workers had done everything to perfection. All the measurements were accurate and he couldn’t find any fault. As he was turning away to go downstairs, something caught his attention. He saw something protruding out of the joint in one of the columns. He became curious and went to check it up. As he was getting nearer, he was so engrossed in his quest to satisfy his curiosity that he didn’t realize his legs had been entangled by a loose rope on the floor.

He got closer to where the protruding metal was located and realized it was just one of the metals they used to brace the columns the previous day. He therefore ended his tour on that floor to inspect other things. He tried to move, but couldn’t. Suddenly, he fell to the ground and was skidding. Unknown to him, the rope that got fastened to his leg was joined to a cylinder filled with gas for welding. The cylinder had fallen from the seventh floor and was on its way to the ground.

Mr. Roberts immediately knew the danger he was in. He quickly held a metal to prevent himself from falling. The gas cylinder was too heavy and weighed him. The force of gravity was also making matters worse. He was losing his grip on the metal he was holding. His face was drenched with sweat as his heart pounded in his chest. Was this going to be his last day on earth? He had so many people who were depending on him for survival. All he could do was to pray for a miracle.
