Vanity – Episode 10

VANITY EPISODE 10

Lawyer Ayibontey: Just imagine, this is preposterous, catastrophe, human malignancy, arrant nonsense my boy, this is unlawful detaintion of the highest order, are you aware my niece was supposed to be in the 3pm flight to the United States? Do you know the magnitude of harm you have caused her? Do you know by chance the financial lost you have brought to her business and the contract deal that will pass her by? And your commander is here pleading with me to come down. Esi go to the car and get me my other phone I need to speak with the IGP now.

Chief Supt Ansah Akoto: Counsel please it has gotten to this for you to invite my overall boss into this matter, I believe we are doing pretty well with our dialogue here and I know by the time you leave this office we all will come to a compromise.

Lawyer Ayibontey: Compromise how? Are you by chance telling me you people will pay for her plane ticket and hotel reservation?

Chief Supt Ansah Akoto: (sweating with the question which was just put to him) Hmm counsel I didn’t say we will pay for the lost of your niece unfortunate predicament.

Lawyer Ayibontey: Ah commander I taught you had something soothing to say for me to loosen up a bit but it happens you are rather adding to injury insult which will make me take a deadly move that will turn things around in this very police station and mind you, you won’t be an exception when the action takes place. Esi what are you waiting for, I taught I told you to get me my other phone, that line in the phone is what the IGP knows very well.

Chief Supt Ansah Akoto: My dear please sit down and help me talk to your uncle.

Lawyer Ayibontey: You think pleading with me will change anything here right? Do you know the cost of her airline ticket and hotel reservation?

Esi how much money did you borrow to top up for your sister’s travelling?

Esi Haziel: (playing smart to the game her lawyer had brought on board) Personally I gave her one thousand and three hundred dollars (1300$), then she made me borrow an additional two thousand dollars (2000$) from my boss to add to it because she wanted to travel with the first class section of the plane, she last told me that she usually meets top class bussinessmen there where she interacts and exchange contacts with them to boast her business.

Lawyer Ayibontey: Commander you see now, this is only one of the few people my niece has borrowed from. Am yet to get the total number of persons my niece borrowed from and the total amount involved, someone has to pay for this reckless conduct and I don’t care who this person or persons are?

Corporal Kwaku-Duah: (sensing danger now, goes on his knees and started pleading for mercy) Sir please temper justice with mercy and forgive me, am a youngman who is now building a family, my wife was discharged from hospital just some few days ago with a kidney problem, her weekly medication alone is more than my salary and also I became a dad of triplet just four (4)months ago, am the breadwinner of my entire family, I am the one responsible for my little siblings school fees and their upkeep. Sir please consider me for the mistake I did, I promise to make amends to the problem I have caused.

Lawyer Ayibontey: Oh how pathetic, it’s rather unfortunate your small mistake will cost you a lot but as I said someone has to incure the bill of my niece’s lost. I will put together the cost and let you have it as soon as my niece is released from that smelling place you keeping her.

Chief Supt Ansah Akoto: My friend go and release that young lady immediately. Next time you will know how to treat your suspects. Sir please they say “to err is human but to forgive is divine”, we can’t pay fully for your niece’s lost but I will plead with you so we try and raise let say five thousand dollars (5000$) for her. You can send Esi here to come for it around 2pm tomorrow.

Lawyer Ayibontey: So you think you have done well right? I will think about it and give you a call by tomorrow morning exactly 9am. Esi take his call card, I will be waiting for you by the car.

Chief Supt Ansah Akoto: Am very grateful for your patience sir. This unmeritted favour will always be fresh in my mind sir. Please have a blissful day.

Lawyer Ayibontey leaves the commander’s office and went straight to the car park to wait for Esi Haizel and Adjoa Wusua. Shortly Esi Haizel together with Corporal Kwaku-Duah and Adjoa Wusua came out of the charge office, Adjoa Wusua was excited that at last she was out of the police cell and air of freedom was blowing all over her body once again. Corporal Kwaku-Duah: Sir I want to thank you again for not taking into action your threats, I have learnt my lesson in a very hard way and I promise never to repeat that mistake again, Sister Esi help me thank your uncle and Sister Adjoa please find a place in your heart and forgive me for the inhuman treatment I gave to you when you were in our custody.

Lawyer Ayibontey said something which made Corporal Kwaku-Duah tremble

———

Lawyer Ayibontey: Well I have not totally forgiven you or changed my mind yet, as to whether I will pursue this case further or not it will be communicated to you by your commander by 9am tomorrow and after that you will be given five (5)hours at your disposal to meet your side of the bargain, if I were you I would be rushing to the commander’s office to get to know the task ahead of you. Adjoa Wusua stood there watching Lawyer Ayibontey like a comedian on stage performing because of the way he was throwing orders around to the police officer, whiles she was behind bars she heard a lot about Corporal Kwaku-Duah as to how he doesn’t take orders from anyone apart from the commander and right infront of her was this same officer talking with his hands at his back and almost bowing down when talking, who said “man no dey?”, if you haven’t met your match you claim you are an undisputed local champion, Lawyer Ayibontey dismissed him and told him to go to his commander’s office to listen to the task ahead of them but before he left Adjoa Wusua told him to give her details of where Nana Yaw had been hospitalised and he immediately brought a note pad from his brea$t pocket and wrote some information on the paper before handing it over to Adjoa Wusua, Lawyer Ayibontey now took a look at Adjoa Wusua and gave her a warm welcome hug, he requested that Esi Haizel should drop him at the place he took him from and then send Adjoa Wusua to the beach so she could swim and clean her body from the stench of police cell around her. Esi Haizel drove lawyer to his office/home and then planned on how she will send Adjoa Wusua to the finest beach resort around, on the way Adjoa Wusua started asking questions about the lawyer and Eddysongs:

Adjoa Wusua: Baby girl thank you so much for playing a key role for my release this afternoon, you have proven to me beyond all reasonable doubt that some friends are even more than siblings, please can you call Eddysongs for me to also thank him for instructing one of his credible lawyer’s to come amd rescue me within a twinkle of an eye.

Esi Haizel: Don’t be silly my dear, what are friends for? Didn’t you sacrifice you body for me to secure a job in my current workplace? Did you take a dime from me before or after I got the job? Do you charge me for any thing good you do for me? The truth of the matter is I didn’t get in touch with Eddysongs as we agreed upon because all his line were not connecting, I didn’t know how to break the news to you so I took it upon myself to go and get you a lawyer myself.

Adjoa Wusua: What? So you went to that extreme just to get me out from detention? Wow you have swept me off my feet and I don’t know how I can pay you back.

Esi Haziel: You can chop off you head for me as a form of gratitude to me for what you claim I have done since am the only person who has shown to my friend that she means a lot to me.

(They both burst into laughter with Esi’s statement)

Adjoa Wusua: Hey but wait ooo whose car are we cruising in this lovely afernoon?

Esi Haizel: I taught you won’t ever ask me this question since we were alone now, well this is the car that was given to me to shut up or go mute, my land documents will be ready by the close of today.

Adjoa Wusua: Tell me you are joking, you mean you are now a eligible car owner and soon you will be a land owner also. Bae give me five (5) beacause you do all, I commot cap give you wai, I taught I was smart but you have proven to me that you are the smartest amongst us, indeed Fanti women don’t carry last and you don’t subscribe to dull moves. Am very happy for you my friend/sister from another mother I have reliased you don’t talk your walk but rather walk your talk and am really impressed about your progress in just a little while, looking at the time its getting nearer for you to close at the office so why dont we go to your office first and collect your documents before you take me to the beach.

Esi Haizel: That is a very good idea, I didn’t think towards that direction at all, am glad you are back to give me first hand advice

(Esi’s phone rings and before she answers the call, she checks the number, it is an unknown number)

Caller: Hello Esi, this is Lawyer Ayibontey, tomorrow at 2pm I want you to go to the commander’s office and collect some foreign legal tender from him, I mean he will give you five thousand dollars(5000$) as compensation to what they did to your friend and please don’t engage anyone at the police station in a form of conversation when you get there, I trust you know what am driving at? When you receive the money call me so we meet at an eatry close to the sport complex. Enjoy the rest of your day

Esi Haizel: Okay sir and thanks for everything, am impressed and grateful as well. (call ends)

Adjoa Wusua: Was that Elder Akyeah?

Esi Haizel: No my dear, that was the lawyer, he wants to meet me tomorrow.

Adjoa Wusua: Eeerm tell me so how did you get that man to come to my aid and how much did he charge you because with the pace in how things unfolded itself back there, I can see you paid him a good sum of money that’s why he expedite things over there. He was very precise and efficient in his delivery, he spoke with authority and gave me hope the very moment he spoke with me.

Esi Haizel: My dear he took a reasonable amount from me even though at first when I met him, I taught I had approached a wrong advocate but as I went through his picture gallery I realised he was a gem and a national treasure. Although it seems he has an ablutophobic attitude.

Adjoa Wusua: (cuts in quickly) Big grammar my dear, what does “ablutophobic attitude” mean?

Esi Haizel: Hahahaha you mean this small grammatic expression you don’t understand. Ablutophobia means someone who doesn’t like bathing and ablutophobic attitude is the act of practising ablutophobia. I intend to get him some toiletries and a nice perfume when I meet him tomorrow afternoon.

Esi drives to the compound of the company car park and excuses herself to get the land documents from her boss leaving Adjoa Wusua in the car. She comes back to meet a very big surprise at the car park……….

Can you guess what EsiHaizel came to meet
